He can. It doesn't mean that he does it right now. Also, Tails should know that hold a single piece of wood is easier that hold many in someone mouth. I think it was a smart move to not break it before transporting it.

Generally, Snails always seem to walk in a regular speed, and he is backing here, and he can't quite turn his head to look behind.
Yeah, i's easier to carry regarding holding it, it's just the fact that they have no good means to actually chop it to pieces.
