Well actually you play as them together because they are like joined at the hip. Kazooie is always in Banjo's backpack and can assist Banjo at anytime with egg projectiles and other attacks. Also in Banjo Tooie you can play as each one individualy to complete levels requiring either Banjo or Kazooie's individual skills
