Was watching a documentary about pigeons one day about their homing instinct and how people prepare them for races. There was a method they mentioned that uses their instinct of being paired for life. One will remove the female from the pen and leave the male alone for a day. Before the race, they reunite the male with the female. Shortly after, they then take the male pigeon out far away (this is part of the race. To see which pigeon will come home first) in an unfamiliar territory and the race begins.
