So heres a question, are Snails and his dad using Russian/italian hybrids in order to avoid potential Colony Collapse syndrome or do ponies have spells that get rid of the mites before they can become an issue?

They use a batch of dried herbs which's smell repel mites, placed at the entry of the hives, so that all the bees go through it. The mites then fall to the ground.
