it generally takes 1-2 months of solid weightlifting to show signs of muscle gain. The first few weeks is all neuro concentration gain (higher concentration of electrical fibers in your muscle matrix) and your body freaking out to new stressors.
it sucks, but make sure you do a lot of squats. focuses on the booty build and gives you the butt that can bounce a coin off of.
EDIT: on a positive note, it shows that you are loosing weight

you don't get too shapy from aerobics. don't get me wrong, that stuff is AMAZING for endurance and flexibility. A low/med weight (50-60% of your max) and high repetition (16-25 reps per set) will put you well on your way to lean/cut muscle tone. Think of it like situps, you do a butt load of them not high weight sets.

Not even to just get uh.. firmer? right now pretty much my entire being is small-ish but soft, save for the calves since they get it harder than the rest from all the walk I do.
I'm not really after defined muscles, but mostly for something like not as plush

you'll get firmer. but its increasingly difficult to continue the trend.
Rule of thumb. If you spend an hour doing arobics/endurence *jogging* and you burn 500 kilo calories for the day. If you go and weightlift, you may burn 100 that day. BUT, for every 1 lb of muscle you gain, it takes an additional 100k cal/day to fuel it. within 6 months you are burning more fat/calories a day with the extra muscles than you would with just aerobics.
BUT remember*** never put all your eggs in the same basic. balance is key to happy/health
