Weekly Webcam #17: What Does It Do?
Gem (MLP) Reference
Okay, so when I first had the idea to make the ponified OCs an actual thing (with adapted/new backstories and all, not just drawing the OCs as ponies), the response was pretty negative and I was rather upset and disheartened that. Still kinda am. But now I've had a little more time to actually reflect on it instead of just being stuck in the mindset of everyone hating something I tried pretty hard to do.

For those of you who complained and sent me hate for this, I'll still address that here.

“But Vi, ponies suck! Pokemon are so much better! You're ruining your design! Etc”
I'm just gonna be brutally honest here and say I never took these comments seriously at all. For those of you who hate ponies, that's your problem, and you still have no reason to complain because REGULAR GEM IS STILL GOING TO STAY THE EXACT FUCKING SAME AND IS NOT AFFECTED BY THIS IN ANY WAY WHATSOEVER. If you don't like pony Gem simply because he's a pony, then just ignore him and pay attention to regular Gem! It's not that hard!

“But Vi, it's still pretty much the same character and story! What's the point of giving him a backstory if it's almost the exact same?”
Here's the thing: I don't make my characters to support stories. I make stories to support my characters. The focus was NEVER the story in the first place, and probably never WILL be. The only reason any of my OCs even HAVE backstories is pretty much just to explain why they are who and what they are, and to give them a setting and situations to work off of. THAT is the point of this. It is the same character, granted, but it's a new spin on that character and this opens up tons more opportunities of what I can do with him, as well as others. The main reason I never drew the ponified Ocs more was because I had no setting for them and never knew what to have them doing, and this will fix that. I might even be able to do RPs with this. I might even just have FUN with this. If it's still pointless to you even knowing all of that, then you don't understand how or why I even make my OCs in the first place.

“But Vi, pony Gem's backstory and design don't make sense with the MLP canon!”
I completely disagree for a number of reasons. While my headcanon for ghost ponies isn't official canon, it does not go AGAINST official canon in any way. In fact, ghosts have been mentioned several times in MLP, and while they haven't been proven to exist, they also have not been DISPROVEN to exist. They really just haven't been elaborated on at all, and I am simply taking advantage of that. If all these other mythological creatures and dark magic can exist in MLP, and if they can just throw crystal ponies into the show right the fuck outta nowhere, I see no reason why ghost ponies couldn't also be a thing, especially the way I made them work. If I come across something that gives me a good reason to believe otherwise, then that'll be different. Now, if you were talking about the elemental magic (ghost and ice-themed magic I mentioned) not being MLP canon and/or drawing more from Pokemon, then you must have missed the parts of the show in which elemental magic has been used, and you must have missed all the other perfectly accepted OCs that are specialized in/built around it. If you meant the cursed cave and enchanted gemstones don't make sense with the canon, then... damn do you even know the first thing about this canon?

If any of you would like to give me a good reason not to go through with this—something that can't be debated against very well and isn't just based on YOUR feelings—then go right ahead, but at this point odds are you're not gonna stop me anyway. If you would like to just keep whining, don't be too surprised if I'm not happy to hear it or if I blatantly ignore you, which is really what I should have done in the first place.

Before I finish, I'd just like to say I'm really thankful LuridSilence was able to help pull me out of my doubts about this, along with my more supportive friends and watchers. Thank you guys. In the end you mean more to me than the nay-sayers, even if the latter can also get to me sometimes in great numbers.

I'll probably start making references for the ponified OCs sometime soon. Sometime down the road I MIGHT revive the pony OCs blog, but I have no immediate plans to do so. My first concern is going to be school, starting tomorrow. We'll have to just see how it goes.

Regardless of what I decide to do with this, it isn't going away. You might as well just deal with it.
