I am working on my first fursuit project, a pair of matching partial red fox fursuits for my daughter and myself. With luck, they will make their first con appearance at Worldcon 2013 in San Antonio, TX, August 28th to September 2nd.

This is my second attempt at making a fursuit head. This one is for my daughter, who will call herself Viczen Drago when in this fursuit. (UPDATE: Pictures now of finished version)

The jaw moves as my daughter talks, moving with her own jaw. It can open more than 6 inches in an extreme facial gesture like a yawn, and in normal talking opens about an inch.

The follow-me eyes have a better than 90 degree arc of vision (45 degrees left and right), and she can see as well as when wearing sunglasses, because the wide vertical-slit pupils of the eyes are sunglasses lenses. She can wear glasses inside the head and can read fine print while wearing it, or navigate in a fairly dark room. I added a clear plastic 'cornea' to the eyes, so they have very realistic reflection highlights.

The three-fan cooling system is powered by eight AA batteries, located at the back of the head to counterweight the muzzle. I can also substitute a single 9V battery, and run the fans 25% quieter but also 25% slower. At full power, the two main fans provide a 20 cubic foot per minute heat exhaust out through the ears, while a smaller 5 cubic foot per minute fan in the muzzle blows air in through the mouth and into the wearer's face. The three fans are rated for a noise level of just 34 DB when all three are running. I can hear quite well while wearing it, even with the fans going. The power switch is inside the right cheek, where it can be reached through the mouth.

The fur is completely stitched together and stitched in place, with hot-melt glue used only around the eye openings.

The hair is styled to be worn down and loose for a more feminine look. This head is about 2 inches narrower than the one I made for myself (Ryan J. Reynard), and a similar amount smaller front to back, to give a more youthful and feminine appearance.

The teeth and the nose are made with FIMO clay, and the tongue and roof of the mouth are made with fun foam.

She is quite excited about having her own fursuit and going to cons with it.

I also take it that's your daughter modeling the head too?  :)

Yes, that is my daughter in the last two photos in this set. Once both fursuits are complete I'll post some photos of both of us together.

why not use a lighter 9V battery?

Edit: cant wait for the next chapter of "The Secret" i have them on my phone for mobile viewing

The fans are designed to run on 12 volts DC power. Running them with a 9 volt battery works, but they run 25% slower and cool less. Also, the batteries counterweight the muzzle, so it isn't so nose heavy.

The head is still very light weight, due to the construction methods I devised. I'll post the weight later, but it is about half the weight of most similar heads.

I will get back to my writing after these two fursuits are done. Probably during Worldcon, at the end of the month.

i was thinking less about the weight, and more ease of installation and price

The way I have it set up, the wearer can go either way. There are two 4-cell AA battery packs at the back of the head, easily accessed, and with sliding covers that will prevent the batteries from falling out if you get bumped or jostled. There is a standard 9V battery connector at the end of the wires from those two packs, which snaps into a second standard 9V connector to power the rig. To use a 9V battery instead, just take out the AA batteries, unsnap the 9V connectors, and snap a 9V battery onto the connector leading to the fans and switch. There's a pocket beside the AA battery packs where the 9V battery can be tucked securely.

Just weighed the head, and it weighs exactly 4 pounds, with the eight AA batteries installed. So while using a 9V battery would make it a little lighter, the difference wouldn't be that much over all, and the added weight is worth it for more cooling efficiency.

Damn, that's cool. (no pun intended)

And as far as cost, simple solution is rechargeables, higher initial cost yes, but with most newer batteries having a 900-1000 cycle life they come out really cheap.
