A little background info on him:
'A short but solidly-built German squirrel with blonde hair, Hauptmann Messler serves as the commanding officer of a sizable detachment of Heer troops on the Greek island of Mandrakos, there to provide security for an important Kriegsmarine radar and submarine installation. He is gay and in a relationship with his second in command, Karl Taussig. Alone amongst his fellow German officers, Messler believes in measured and friendly relations with the people of Kheros, the primary city on Mandrakos. He dislikes the brutish SS and prefers to avoid any interaction with them at all if he can help it. A fierce military leader, although he believes in fair treatment of prisoners of war and considers civilians off-limits (hence his disgust with the SS), in battle he is without mercy and will stop at nothing to win.'
