Despite the popularity of his role as Marshall Matt Dillon on the radio version of Gunsmoke, Conrad was one of the least-liked lead actors in radio, and the hardest to work with. He was personally responsible for the Nero Wolfe radio show, as he personally identified very strongly with the character, and not only because both were fat, but because both were arrogant bastards.
It was that distinctive voice of his that kept him on air.
