The detective discovered that it was NOT a reachable pattern, but a key to operating the door to a secret passage from the author's fireplace. Press the square tiles in the manrtle corresponding to the black pieces in the pattern, and a door will open ! It was meant for the family to seek sanctuary there, in case of all-out war.
