Apparently, Tremaine doesn't get many opportunities for pics that are just cute.
Back to the story though...
After a short while, Ami got her bearings back and she asked, "What are you doing here?"
Mona sat down next to Ami and explained, "My name is Mona, I come from the very ring you were rubbing."
Ami looked at the ring, "I was just polishing a little dirt off of it."
"And in doing so," Mona explained in a casual, jovial tone, "you have summoned me from within it out to your world. You saw the smoke and I am here, so surely you can figure out yourself that I am not lying to you. As you now hold the ring, you now have me, the genie of the ring."
"So, you're my," Ami paused a bit, nervous;ly thinking over the implications, "you're my genie, and thus a slave?"
"Slave is such a naughty word, master," Mona said in jest, "but it is accurate. I know that in this land the concept is seen as harsh and amoral, but it need not be so cruel. Unlike the Africans enslaves centuries before your time and centuries after mine, I had a choice in the matter."
Ami looked at the genie and brought her fingertips together, "how so?"
Mona closed her eyes and explained in an amiable manner, "back some time in the third century, I was a harem girl in a land neighboring Persia. I do not recall which land specifically, It has been centuries after all. However, was a girl in the harem of a sultan who had not the time for his harem. This left us with each other for most of the time, but he would come to us with gifts to try and make up for lost time."
Ami smiled a bit, "You harem girls had each other for most of the time? How do you mean?"
"Please, Master, I would rather keep this G rated for now." Ami blushed and Mona continued, "One present for me was a ring, not entirely unlike yours. And that ring too had a genie. A male jackal who called himself Amal when around the mortals. I too was surprised, but he offered me three wishes. I tried to tell the sultan about the genie, but he said that I should make the wishes for now I was his master."
Ami interrupted, "Isn't it against Islamic law to work with genies?"
Mona answered, "That would be with Djinn, similar beings, but not the same. Djinn were never mortal to begin with, being creatures of elemental smokeless fire. Genies however are often mistaken for Djinn, but Islam was developed in the 5th century and thus had no relevance in my more pagan time."
Ami nodded, "I see."
Mona continued, "As these wishes were my responsibility, I felt that I had plenty. So I put my wishes into the sultan's favor. First, I wished for him to have time for his harem. This took more hired help, so my second with was for the kingdom to have enough wealth that the sultan would never lack the money he needed. Soon though, the sultan had grown bored with his money and time, so I wished him happiness. And happiness he had for the rest of his life. It was after the sultan's funeral that Amal had returned to me and offered to make me into a genie. He said that it would be a reward for my selfless wishes for the sultan. I eagerly accepted the choice, and then over a few centuries, I had learned the ways of a genie, and thus became one."
"Wow," Ami said in amazement, "and what are the rules when it comes to dealing with a genie?"
Mona giggled, "Well, if you've seen that Disney film, you have a couple of the rules there; lives and minds are sacred. I cannot kill with my magic, nor can I affect one's feelings or perspectives. I could resurrect somebody, but in doing so I would doom them to a nightmarish existence of terrible luck. Death HATES to be robbed.
"Also, while I am effectively immortal, a genie can be hurt by damage to the container. So take good care of that ring if you want me to stay alive for you. Also, wishing me free will deprive me of all power. I will be mortal again, and I chose this life because I find it enjoyable. So please do not wish me free.
"And finally, when it comes to wishes, a genie can offer as many as they please, but more and more wishes carries the price that these wishes can get more and more corrupted. Genies have to negotiate these things with something called the Cosmic Whim, which insists that power has a price, and for us, they want to turn our wishes into perversions of the master's wants, while we want to make the master happy. Well, not all of us, but many of us do. So we negotiate with every wish given. As such, it's a good idea for genies to limit the wishes and set a standard. If cosmic power is needed, then it's a wish. but if you wish for a sandwich, I'm calling Subway, leaving some gold, and I might get a sandwich for myself too."
"Would adding chocolate chip cookies be too much to ask too?" Ami smirked, revealing that she was joking.
Mona gave a short glare and smiled, "of course not. The point is, we don't want to anger the Whim."
Ami nodded, "This is really quite interesting. And it's been a great afternoon too. I used my bonus to buy this ring, and here i am now talking with its genie and getting to know her. By the way, I'm Ami, and would rather be called that."
"Sure thing Ami," Mona agreed.
