Character Sheet for Ryan J. Reynard
Sex/Gender
Male
Species
Red Fox
Age
30+
Character Description
Ryan is a character I designed for my first fursuit. It's a partial fursuit, with follow-me eyes and a moving jaw. The areas covered by a T-shirt and shorts will not be furred.

He will typically be seen wearing a black or dark blue t-shirt or polo shirt and grey or khaki cargo pants shorts.
Personality
Friendly, and likes hugs.
Background/History
Ryan is an explorer. He likes nature and hiking and camping. He especially likes fishing for trout and bass.
Relatives/Family
Daughter: "Viczen Drago"
Body
6'2" tall, 215 pounds. A bit overweight and full in the belly, but quite strong. Most of his fur is an almost maroon red. He has black fur on his feet and about halfway up from his ankles to his knees. Likewise the fur on his hands is black, with black fur halfway up from wrists to elbow. He also has black fur on the tips of the back of his ears. He has a white chest ruff, white throat, and white fur on his lower jaw, the sides of his upper jaw, and his cheeks, and on the tip of his tail. His hair is a glossy black, with bangs in front, and long enough to wear in a pony tail. His eyes are bright green, with vertical slit pupils typical of most foxes.
Clothing
Ryan will typically be seen wearing a black or dark blue t-shirt or polo shirt, and grey or khaki cargo pants shorts.
I am working on my first fursuit project, a pair of matching partial red fox fursuits for my daughter and myself. With luck, they will make their first con appearance at Worlcon 2013 in San Antonio, TX, August 28th to September 2nd.

For the fur markings diagram, I used a template kindly provided by Mandy Draeger, of Synchra Studios. You can find the original template here: http://www.synchrastudios.com/gallery/v/syncstudios/ch...

I traced over her template and colored it, just to get a quick idea of what the markings would be for both characters. Aside from the fact that my character, "Ryan J. Reynard", and my daughter's character, "Victoria Draco" are male and female, respectively, the main difference is that mine has his hair in a pony tail, while her hair will be loose.

The next pic in the series shows the fur I bought for the project. While I would have liked a more 'realistic' shade for the red fur, this was the best I could find that would survive being shaved to different lengths for the shorter facial fur.

The next two pics are the plastic canvas prototype, and my first attempt at the follow-me eyes.

The rest of the pics show the final framework for my head, which is now steel wire and aluminum expanded metal mesh. I buy the expanded aluminum mesh in 12" x 15" sections at a grocery store. They sell it as a disposable 'grill topper' for barbecue cooking. This makes the head very light, and not very hot to wear, and gives me excellent hearing inside the head. I may add a few narrow strips of fiberglass to reinforce some places, but for the most part the framework is easy to work with, and easy to stitch things to it.

The follow-me eyes have a better than 90 degree arc of vision (45 degrees left and right), and I can see as well as when wearing sunglasses, because the wide vertical-slit pupils of the eyes are sunglasses lenses. I can wear glasses inside the head and can read fine print while wearing it, or navigate in a fairly dark room. I added a clear plastic 'cornea' to the eyes, so they have very realistic reflection highlights.

The three-fan cooling system is powered by eight AA batteries, located at the back of the head to counterweight the muzzle. I can also substitute a single 9V battery, and run the fans 25% quieter but also 25% slower. At full power, the two main fans provide a 20 cubic foot per minute heat exhaust out through the ears, while a smaller 5 cubic foot per minute fan in the muzzle blows air in through the mouth and into the wearer's face. The three fans are rated for a noise level of just 34 DB when all three are running. With no fur yet on the head, but with it fully wrapped in masking tape to prepare the pattern for furring it, I could still hear quite well, and while if I walked into a silent room with the fans going, people could hear the fans, they were not terribly noticeable. In typical ambient noise levels, and with fur to muffle them, they will still be very quiet. The power switch is inside the right cheek, where it can be reached through the mouth.

The fur will mostly be stitched together and stitched in place, with glue used only around the eye openings. Teeth and the nose will be made with FIMO clay, and the tongue and roof of the mouth with fun foam.

I'll add more pics here as I get the heads furred and make the tails, hands and feet.

It could be simple coincidence, or the fact, that people often thought of as "Metlars" look much alike, but i think you look kind of similar to me, which is absolutely awesome. I mean hey, who wouldnt love to look like one of their favored artists X-D
