As for why Soren is still in his ring wear, perhaps he didnt get the chance to change or stayed in uniform for pictures or to stay cool considering all the black fur.
I cant even think of a reason why Soren has a gun, at first it just seemed legit to have some manner of defense but in a camp surrounded by soldiers it didnt make sense.
I realize its likely that soldiers dont stick the guns in the ground and put the Fallen`s helmets on the stock anymore because of who may find them.
All of that pales to the fact its meant to be a memorial day image. The gun and helmet is a reference to past and present soldiers. They stuck the gun in the ground to mark the graves of the fallen, the modern gun and helmet stuck in the ground is a reference, maybe homage, to past and present soldiers.
