Karno ( https://www.furaffinity.net/user/karno/ ) and I recently collaborated on another 'Rat-ionality Matters' comic ( https://www.furaffinity.net/view/10439992/ and https://www.furaffinity.net/view/10448094/ ), which showed a whole variety of variations of Dee the rattess. I know Brainy Twilight ( http://brainy-twilight.tumblr.com/ ) likes brains in jars, so sent her the link ( http://brainy-twilight.tumblr.com/post/49515114559/bra... ), and she even came up with an improved design ( http://brainy-twilight.tumblr.com/post/50091952258/bra... ). So I've decided to adopt the whole idea into Dee's personal narrative: after Earthly oligarchs have gotten sufficiently fed up with the Eichsfeldian colony, they start arranging for serious assassination attempts - one of which comes so close to killing Dee, that she had to lose almost all of what remained of her organic body. If I'm lucky, I'll manage to get a story or comic made out of the details.

And don't worry - the setting does include full-sensory VR and lifelike android bodies, so she can still run around in her previous ratty form whenever the mood strikes her. She'll just have her brain located elsewhere when she does...

*Reads the new Rationality matters* Have you or Karno read Genocide Man?

Personally I think the best way to counter super-plagues resulting from DIY biology would be to use the same tech to create vaccines as soon as they emerge.

There's a constant race between technologies that improve attack and ones that improve defense; while we can work as hard as possible on the latter, it's possible that destroying is inherently easier than preserving. (Eg, there aren't too many ways to defend against a nuke...)

I'm not too concerned about nukes, uranium-235 and plutonium aren't exactly common.
But I personally could cook up some multiple antibiotic-resistant Black Death in my kitchen with present day technology, I might even be able to produce a super-flu virus (though I have no experience with viruses).  But at most any epidemic I create might last a couple weeks before someone found an antibiotic without a resistance plasmid in the biotech catalogs or inject a sample of my virus into a bunch of chicken eggs and harvest the result as a vaccine.

You might enjoy reading a forthcoming novel which covers some details along very similar lines: the first of a new "Black Tide Rising" series, "Under a Graveyard Sky" by John Ringo.

Wow, so much to look at!  I'll have to check it out.  In the mean time, it is cool to see a brain in a jar in such fighting form!

Dee's just glad that she and the rest of the Nakama are fighting on their home turf, which gives them the home-field advantage... like playing combat engineer and rigging just about everything to blow up on command (among other tricks), giving them the chance to apply lots of battlefield management to redirect the assassins into the best possible combat zone.

And my first thought on reading this is, A View From The Gallery! Who does maintenance on the Eichsfeldian colony, anyway? Are you going with my story on that?

I'm afraid I don't remember the specifics - but I do recall mentioning something along the lines that whenever you want to write a story based around Dee and her setting, I'll be more than happy to let you. :)
