He's lucky that Olson didn't ask Perry White for a transferal to the "Arts & Leisure" dept. and, upon being granted such, to hand the signal watch to Clark Kent so he can return it to Superman. Not wanting to be Superman's pal anymore, he didn't desire to be rescued by him anymore, and transferring to reviewing operas,art galleries,etc., would make it HIGHLY unlikely that he'd need Superman's rescue anymore.
