The bedroom was quiet, save for the heavy rhythm of breathing and the soft, lingering rustle of fabric as Moonstar pulled the pillow tight against his chest. Night had a way of magnifying silence. With the lights off, the room felt far too large, the empty space beside him far too cold. He pressed his face into the cotton, willing sleep to take over, but his mind refused to quiet down. Thoughts tumbled over one another in a frustrating, relentless loop, spinning around a deep ache in his center that wouldn't settle. A single tear slipped free, dampening the pillow casing. It was the quiet kind of frustration—the kind born from reaching out for a physical touch that wasn't there, clinging to a hollow substitute because it was all he had to hold onto in the moment. Yet, right at the edges of his consciousness, the image of the person he loved filled his thoughts. His mind reached out, painting a memory so vivid and tender it felt almost tangible. In the stillness, his thoughts wrapped the comforting shape of his partner around his back, resting a soft cheek against his head and draping familiar arms around his shoulders. In his mind, they wore a quiet, steady smile—the same comforting look that used to make the rest of the world drop away. It didn't demand anything from him; his mind simply held onto that image the way they used to embrace, trying to quiet the noise in his head with the lingering warmth of that love. Moonstar squeezed his eyes shut tighter, holding fast to the pillow. He couldn't turn around and touch the smile occupying his mind, but for a few quiet moments in the dark, he let his wrap him in that love, holding onto the memory until the storm in his head begins to calm and he finally drifts off to sleep.
