Kinktober 20: Classic

The storm had been building for days, but Mara never imagined it would break like this.  It was sudden, violent, as if the sky itself had torn open. By late afternoon the clouds were a single bruised mass stretching from horizon to horizon.  She had always enjoyed long walks in the rain, but not like this.  This was dangerous, and something she was not going to be easily able to escape, the path was already washing away rapidly.

The rain hammered her fur like fists. Mara hugged her thin cloak to her body and ran trying to make it home, but increasingly hampered by the thing dark much her clawed toes were starting to rapidly sink into, slowing her with every step. The water rose faster than she could think, climbing from her ankles to her shins to her knees. She pushed toward the hill and away from the water’s rapid rise, but could only go so fast like this.

A sudden surge of water slammed into her side, knocking her off balance. She stumbled, fell, and the flood seized its chance. The current wrapped around her legs, dragging her toward the ravine where the river cut deep into the earth. She clawed at the ground, but the mud slid through her fingers. She tried to stand, but the water yanked her down again.

“Mara!”  She thought she heard her name, but it was impossible. No one was out here. No one could be.  The current pulled harder. She slipped beneath the surface, cold swallowing her whole. She kicked, fought, broke through the water with a gasp, but the river was relentless. It spun her, dragged her, hurled her toward the ravine like she weighed nothing at all.

Then everything changed.

The roar of the storm didn’t stop, but something inside her stilled.  The water around her slowed, not entirely, but enough that she could lift her head and see through the sheets of rai, and a figure stood on the flood.

Not beside it, not above it, but on it.

She was tall, luminous, her silhouette shimmering with a soft gold light that didn’t belong to the storm. Her hair flowed like strands of sunlight, untouched by the rain. Her wings vast, feathered, and radiant arched behind her nearly naked gold accented form.

“Mara,” the angel said again, her voice warm and steady, cutting through the chaos, light blasting the water apart before her. “Take my hand.”

Mara reached out, trembling, and the moment their hands touched, the current lost its grip entirely. The flood softened, slowed, and then parted around them as if the angel’s presence rewrote the laws of nature.

The angel lifted her effortlessly, cradling her with a strength that felt both gentle and absolute. Mara felt weightless, safe, held in a way she hadn’t felt since childhood. The storm raged around them, but not a single drop touched her now. The angel’s wings curved forward, forming a shelter of light.

“Who are you?” Mara whispered, her voice barely audible over the storm.

“A guardian,” the angel said. “Yours.”

Mara’s breath caught. “I never… I didn’t call for help.”

“You didn’t have to” the angel said softly. Lifting Mara into her arms and taking to the air, rapidly carrying Mara to the hillside and setting her down.  The flood roared past below, unable to climb any higher.  Mara sank to her knees, shaking as soon as she was set down. The angel knelt beside her, wings folding neatly behind her like a cloak of light.

“You saved me,” Mara said, her voice breaking.

“Yes.”

“Why me?”

The angel tilted her head, studying her with a tenderness that made Mara’s chest ache. “Because you matter. Because your story isn’t finished. Because even in your darkest moments, you have never stopped trying.”

Mara looked down at her hands, muddy and trembling. “I didn’t think anyone could hear me.”

“I hear you,” the angel said. “I always have.”

The storm began to ease, the rain softening from a violent torrent to a steady drizzle. The angel stood, her wings stretching wide, glowing brighter now that the sky was dimming.

Mara rose with her. “Will I see you again?”

“Perhaps.  If you or your family has need of me.  Till that time comes though”  The angel reached down and gently caressed her cheek, “For now just focus on living.”
