The castle school was never quite as quiet as it seemed. Moonlight spilled through the tall windows, painting silver stripes across the stone floors, owls fluttered beyond the glass and distant clocks chimed the hours. Most sensible students were tucked up in their beds, dreaming of tomorrows lessons. But one young witch rabbit had rather more pressing matters on her mind.

She had heard a rumor. A very promising rumor. Apparently, the cooks left the bakery door open at night to let the fresh bread cool. And surely, they wouldn't miss just one little loaf? Or maybe even some carrot cake... With her lantern held close and her pointed hat pulled low over her ears, she crept along the corridor, imagining the warm, crusty prize that awaited her. Her stomach gave an impatient growl. She was practically there.

The bakery door stood ajar, and the heavenly scent of freshly baked bread drifted into the hallway. Her ears perked up and a delighted smile spread across her face. She reached for the handle, already imagining that first delicious bite, when a sound echoed through the corridor.

Footsteps.

Her ears shot straight up. Someone was coming, and coming quickly. She clutched her lantern to her chest, suddenly aware of just how much light it was casting across the floor. The shadows no longer seemed friendly, and the bakery door had never looked quite so far away. She froze, one paw hovering above the stone, hoping that if she stayed perfectly still, whoever it was might simply walk past.

The footsteps stopped directly behind her.

For a moment, there was nothing but silence. Then a sleepy, unmistakably stern voice broke through the darkness. “And what, exactly, do you think you're doing out of bed at this hour, young lady?”

The little rabbit swallowed hard. Her lantern flickered, casting enormous shadows across the walls, and her ears slowly sank beneath the brim of her hat. Somewhere inside the bakery, a perfectly innocent loaf of bread sat waiting.

This was going to take some explaining.
