but how the F.... is that thing actually working - a key-lock like that needs a power source, and those doors also don't open by little hamsters turning in a wheel .

even nuclear reactors don't last forever, they usually need refueling every few decades. you see that with the voyager probes, they have a radio-nucleid generator and its slowly running out of juice.
you could probably build one that last a century or two, research reactors (not meant for power generation) sometimes have such a low power setting that they could. but even that would not be long enough here
maybe fusion reactors could in the future last longer, but they are also more complex devices needing maintenance and stuff. we dont have a power source that lasts millenia - except for that large fusion generator in the sky

Geothermal is an option. Even absent any kind of nearby volcanic activity a simple heat exchange loop can provide enough power for maintaining the absolute basics pretty much indefinitely, especially if there's also some kind of storage system to help out during high loads (like running the motors for those heavy bunker doors).
Of course that does also need maintenance.

yeah that makes sense - you could design it relatively low maintenance - the energy generation and storage that is - moving parts on the other side will need maintenance, including the actual door mechanism. But its possible that someone who studied old installations figured them out enough to conduct that maintenance, for example these Lukaras. Keeping something in working order often needs a much lower technological skill than building it in the first place.

Hmmm... I think Lily gave us a hint with her casual, "Because it's from the Lukuras!" comment in Panel 5. Alexander would probably know about as much about history as the Tree, it makes sense he'd teach his daughter at least some of the high points whenever her curiosity was piqued by things during their travels.
