Even the safest laboratory equipment is not 100% reliable. Any researcher who experiences swelling or tightness, among other things, upon interacting with their devices would be well served to declare a state of emergency.
However, this is famously the most ignored rule of science. When external pressures mount, or a particularly meaty discovery is at hand, ignoring safety in favor of learning more is a choice all too many scientists would make.
Even if you don't necessarily want it to, it is, after all, essential to confirm. "Does that happen every time?"
