Hazel the Rabbit was my first attempt at making a character that people could relate to. Most of my characters before her were practically novelty toys, not really having anything to them beyond being a way for me to get my rocks off. But I saw Hazel as a chance to see if I could make a character with a genuine personality and an actual story attached.
I conceived her when I was still in college, so I made her a college student, as I found that to be the best way to make her relatable to myself and others. I never decided on what she was majoring in, as I found the more relatable thing when it came to college is just the struggles of college: Having to wake up at the earliest of times, having to rush from class to class, having little money to your name, having to tackle copious amounts of coursework, etc.
I managed to make and sketch a lot with Hazel, but I only uploaded a handful of it since she started to be much more personal to me than I initially thought she'd be. She was the first character I made I was able to relate with the struggles of, after all. I see her as the start of my interest in making characters that were anthropomorphic animals or fantastical creatures, but deal with things in a grounded way.
I've long since retired Hazel, as I've long since graduated from college, but she was absolutely a character that helped elevate the way I approach my characters in general.
