In re the last question. I know what you mean. I've written two full-length stories. In the first I had a character that I knew from the start that I was going to have to kill off to complete the story. It took a lot of creativity to create the character to be as unlikable as possible, so everyone would cheer when he met his violent end. In the second (my current) story, I've got a character that I've tried to make as lovable as possible. However, I decided that in order to show proper change in another character and acceptance of that change, he should die. He'll die of illness rather than violently, though.
