I'm sorry, I do believe I've fallen into a nerd hole.
This is Byron, of course, but this is Byron as he might appear on the Mattel Intellivision, a game console from the disco-dancin', technologically backward 1970s. This extremely low resolution image (blown up so you can actually see it) nearly fills up the entire Intellivision display, a paltry 160x96 pixels.
Oh, but it gets better! The Intellivision has the same color limitations for tiles as the ZX Spectrum, with a resolution best reserved for a digital pregnancy test. What this means is that you have to be hella clever to get a recognizable picture from this creaky old thing. Oh, oh! And you only get 64 custom tiles (called "cards" on Intellivision, but fuck it, they're tiles), so you've gotta make every single one count.
The tools I have tell me this can be made with 47 tiles, if I reverse the ones on the left side of Byron's face to complete the image. Some tiles are unique and cannot be reversed, particularly those in Byron's head fuzz and around his left eye.
I have every intention of turning this image into a real Intellivision ROM, when I better understand how my development environment IntyBASIC works. I decided to post the image here because I'm not only proud of how it turned out, but because Byron looks psychotic and I kind of like that.
