Ohhhh boy. This was a long-time coming. And I have a lot to say on this OC.
This is Zaxon Kengir. He is a character that's appeared in a bunch of my stories over the years and lots of random crossovers with other stuff. Officially he's the leader of the political movement Cult of the Scythe and the leader / commander of the state Blue Star Movement. Together they form a union that he leads. There is so much lore on him I could write a whole book on it (stuff like his alernate persona The Green Dragon to the Chaos War to the Fall of Cliffcity but I'll definitely write about Zaxon later). Zaxon is a human though it's a running joke that every single person he meets thinks he is a robot or android. That's just a helmet he is wearing. Aside from my love for him, there's another big reason I modeled him.
Zaxon occupied the same role that Ludgren servers now. For a good while (circa 2016-2019), Zaxon was my 'avatar'. Imagined him constantly in these big fights, running an empire on an alien planet and having him meet all these other fictional characters from other games and such I was playing.
This was long before I started 3D modeling and long before I even started posting under the name Zaxon. Though I wrote documentation on him and mapped out his design he didn't really exist outside of my mind. If I had the ability to draw or model then I would 100% have used Zaxon as my avatar and mascot for things. I've done this with a bunch of characters since I was young one but Zaxon and Ludgren are so far the only ones I've made art for. Though I love the idea of going back and making models for all those characters (The Skater is likely the next one) I really need to start animation. (and until The Skater is done Zaxon is actually the oldest character I've modeled).
I actually started modeling him around the 2nd weekend of May, knowing full-well it would be a long project and there was a small chance he could overtake everything. Plus, I was looking at my archives and found last early May I was hard at work on Ludgren. Literally felt like destiny.
Funnily enough, last May 11 I was hard at work on Ludgren so it worked out really well. I just had a strong urge to model that day and decided it was time for Zaxon. After all, I'd completed 43 models prior. Modeling Zaxon would be a real test. I knew he would instantly become the hardest character I've modeled.
I had to put out all stops for Zaxon, knowing full well I needed to do him justice. I really, really wanted it to be good, knowing full well if I didn't I would be confident in him. So I did everything drawing multiple character sheets to blocking out to sculpting to retopology to vertex painting to even making him the 2nd model to use what I call 'Ludgren-shading' (a workflow I made of using Blender -> Krita -> Blender -> Substance Painter and lots of manual light painting). Even gave him my most advanced base rig (which only Raster has at this point). I needed to get him as close to how I saw him in my mind's eye. I got pretty close. The helmet was the hardest part, having to go multiple times over and even get help from a friend.
Plus he ended up breaking the record for most texture maps on one character with 117 at the time of finishing. And you can BET if I go back and make the alternate jacket and scythe that it's gonna go to like 120+.
The only thing I didn't anticipate was that he would completely take over all my 3D time and end up completely delaying animation. I was kinda hoping I could balance it but nope, Zaxon demanded all my attention. Plus, modeling him felt like something I just had to do. Finally give this guy justice and bring him into the real world. I mean shit, a few days ago I literally had a dream where I was in some game show and I had to write down some answer and I wrote Zaxon Kengir on the back of a photograph. I was all in.
His scythe (called the Reign of Telluride) is actually a new addition. Zaxon usually brings with him a scythe made of a rocky stone / concrete material that looks as if it were roughly chiseled from boulders and glued together. In the sake of time (and after coming up with the idea of this) I made a whole new one. Lore-wise, this is a scythe that Ludgren designed to welcome Zaxon into the fold. Idk, I'm taking a break from modeling to focus on animation but it is likely I'll update Zaxon later and give him his actual scythe. The scythe he controls with his mind. While he can lift and wield it he rarely does, instead using it as a projectile or grabbing it out of the air for a single strike. He prefers to wield guns.
With Zaxon complete I finally feel like I can conclude this era of my art and enter a new one, dealing with animation and making images/videos with these models. Still gonna design characters here and there but going forward I absolutely need to get better at animation and composition. I still have a lot of OCs I need to bring to life but no more 'oh let me just model this characte real quick' (and then a month later I'm still working on them).
Modeled everything here. The background is from some old stock CD I have.
