A squirrel/chipmunk mix is redundant, as they're the same species. A chipmunk is a type of squirrel.

they have some differences. Mainly size n tiny tail and the stirpes. But sadly sally no has stripes.
I kinda wish theyed be more spacific.

I think her and her mother are chipmunks because if they had that type of tail, they'd get too many "Lift your tail ;D" jokes in the fandom XD

I've practically written a thesis on this topic. Although they come in many animal types, most mobians are actually the same species (which has been pointed out is actually mostly human) and therefore compatible for breeding. In the case of an interracial pair, any male children will be the father's animal type and female children will be the mother's animal type. This has been evidenced not only through Sally and Elias, but in the 25 years later arc we meet Jaque and Belle (Son and daughter of Antoine and Bunnie,) Mina and Tails' children Skye and Melody, and of course Sonic and Sally's kids Manic and Sonia. However there do seem to be exceptions, such as Mari-An and Rob O the Hedge, who have a son (Jon) who is a male echidna. This might be due to the fact that echidnas are an egg laying species, and only echidnas would hatch from one of their eggs. I don't know what would happen if a male echidna impregnated a non egg laying species but it stands to reason that they'd be whatever the mother is since they wouldn't lay echidna eggs. There is no data about bird, reptile, and insect types mating with other types, though some might be reproductively isolated if by nothing else than their size difference. There is also no data about humans being able to mate with mobians as until very recently the 2 sides were on the opposite sides of a very violent war, though there are 2 human girls living with Lupe's wolf pack, when they come of age they will have rather limited options for their dating pool. Also it turns out that most if not all of the bird types are actually descended from an alien race called the babylonians, so whether they are compatible to mate with the other animal types is unknown.

Sally's species and form are quite simple. In the case of Interspecies relationships, a pair of paternal twins are born- male and female, with each twin resembling their respective parent. Elias looks like a squirrel because of his father. Sally looks the way she does because of her mother. The same is true of Melody and Skye (Mina and Tails' children) and Prince Manic and and Princess Sonia (Sonic and Sally's children).

Every time I have to tag Sally in a picture I draw I have to look up whether she's a chipmunk or squirrel because I keep forgetting. This would make my life so much easier.

she's a hybrid. and so are her father and brother and mother actually. the only living members of her family that are full squirrels are her sister-in-law, Megan and probably her step niece, Alexis.

Chipmunks are part of the family Sciuridae, to which squirrels belong, so they're all already "full squirrels." :)

and Mobian genetics are kind of weird. males are tipically the same species as the father and females are the same species of the mother.

yes, forgot, all Mobians are the same species. the only exception is Rob O the Hedge's son, who is a Hedgehog/echidna hybrid.

I can't forget what I didn't realize. I always thought "Mobian" was more of a national/societal identity (like American, European, etc.). Suggesting they're all the same species despite all obvious evidence to the contrary, even down to using the names of real animals... basic biology and adherence to it apparently isn't one of the writers' strong suits.

that explains why they can reproduce. the different breeds are more like races. and there was a natural evelution, first it was the "Mobosours", then they went extinct and the current Mobian species eventually evolved. the only difference is the thing that started this made it only a matter of thousands of years instead of millions.

not really, it was more mutation because of the human DNA and from there on, it was evelution influenced by envernment.

Chipmunks are squirrels. Fun fact. They're specifically classified as ground squirrels, and actually very few have the short tails typically seen in cartoons. The popular conception is that chipmunks are different from squirrels, but they're in the same family as them.

disney is probably teh greatest movie factory in the matter of trolling thru species.-mixing/anthropomorphical corssbreeding of sorta,so im not shocked or surprised if nintendo/sega did teh same with Sally and or/sonic too (not to mention TAILS ,which should be a mix between a regular Fox and a KITSUNE having at least 3 tails) they just learned from Disney how to do it
i wil just mention an example and for all: the Beast (from teh Beauty and teh BEast) still today a debated character on guesisng what the damn of a speices he was supposed to represent

ah and to be clear....i agree with Kooshmeister: since boths squirrels (sciuroidea) and Chipmunks (tamiasciurioidea) are so cinredibly akin-lookin and beahviourlly too, the mix Sally should represent couldn't be more perfect,imho :3

Regarding the topic of being a "princess" I want to make things clear, since thanks to that douche, Doug Walker, who thinks he's smarter and more knowledgeable than everyone else when really he isn't, many have this wrong idea, just because someone is a "prince" or a "princess" does NOT require them to change the title to a "king" or a "queen" when taking the throne, in many countries in the world the ruler is actually called a "prince" like here in Kuwait, prince does NOT mean "son of a king" but rather a title, United Emirates is a good example too since the word "Emirate" is the equivalent of saying a "prince-dom" on opposed to a "king-dom", I hope I made this clear!

As for her being a squirrel or a chipmunk I always asked myself that, her tail is chipmunk but I was told she's supposed to be... a squirrel? I dunno.

We have no idea how mixed breeds work in the Sonic Universe. It's quite possible that its random chance.
I originally thought Sally was a squirrel...
