Members of the Waffen-SS Einsatzkommando assigned to Spitzohr and Belzig. They're all based on the ones who turn up in the 1983 movie The Keep, based off of F. Paul Wilson's novel of the same name. I just changed their inaccurate all-black uniforms to proper wartime gray.

The Einsatzkommando were the terror troops of the Nazis; brutish bullies termed "mobile killing squads" whose sole purpose was to intimidate, terrorize and murder the Nazis' enemies, usually unarmed civilians. The most hardcore of the hardcore Nazis. The worst of the worst.

Spitzohr doesn't like them; cut from the same cloth as his thuggish adjutant Belzig, he considers the Einsatzkommando too violent and impulsive and prefers not to use them, but his uncle, Oberstgruppenführer Hauser, sends two of them, Lindemann and Skoda, when he goes to Greece. Even just these two, plus Belzig, are enough to make the local commandant, Hauptmann Messler, nervous, and up to a certain point, Spitzohr tries to avoid calling in any more of the SS' terror troops, and tries to rely on just Messler's regular Heer soldiers to quell the Grecian partisan activity.

Eventually, though, the Allied-backed partisans prove too much for Messler's men alone, and Hauser sends his dreaded Einsatzkommando to the island in force - where, as Messler feared so much, they turn their wrath upon the town when they can't get at the rebels.

The Einsatzkommando here are in various states of undress to suggest they've been fighting for a while. Some are jacketless, some are missing their ties, etc.

The lightning bolt insignia does indeed stand for "SS." It was short for Schutzstaffel, which in English means Protection Squadron.
