A hot day, and teenage Arisu is out and about. She's in the cropped top and ultrashort shorts that are her favorite summer outfit - she loves how she looks in it, and her friends admire it. Arisu's parents don't approve of her friends and their "uncouth" personalities, but they can't stop her spending hours with them out in the city far beyond their sight.
Today though she's alone, exploring the wild places around the city's edges, the bits of rough field and scrub that somehow never get built on. And she's just found a tiny marsh - barely larger than her own yard, but she can't take her eyes off the gleaming mud. She finds herself aching to step into it, find out how deep it goes. Well, her legs are bare, so...
Arisu slips off her sneakers and stands, feeling the damp weeds around her feet. She walks to the edge, reaches her right foot out, brings it down on the mud. It oozes deliciously under her, flowing up between her toes. She puts a little weight on it, and it goes down, the mud closing coolly over it and taking her ankle. She can feel nothing solid beneath it - there could be inches or yards of mud between it and the bottom.
Suppose she were to step in completely and find the mud was bottomless, watch and feel herself sinking, into it like a victim of quicksand... the thought fascinates her. True, this little mire's not likely to go far above her knees, but she knows that out in the world there are true deep places, and one day she'll be free to explore them with nobody to forbid her.
