Character Description
Slate tends to be quieter with strangers, but not in a blank way. They're usually paying attention, getting a feel for things, filing away details they probably won't mention until later. They can come off a little hard to read at first, mostly because they don't feel any urge to perform themself for people they don't know. Once they relax, though, they're easier to get attached to than they'd probably like to admit.
They're thoughtful in a very real, lived-in way. The sort who remembers something small you said weeks ago and brings it up because it mattered to them. The sort who gets quietly, stubbornly hung up on unfairness. Slate has a strong instinct for what feels off, what doesn't add up, what could have been handled better. They're not loud about it most of the time, but once something genuinely matters to them, they get a lot harder to move than people expect.
They've also got a playful streak that sneaks up on people. Dry humour, odd little comments, getting distracted by some tiny strange detail and immediately deciding it's interesting. They get attached to things in a way that can be kind of endearing. A weird feather, a smooth stone, a place that feels nice to sit, a habit they didn't mean to start. There's a little bit of whimsy in them, but not the loud sparkly kind. More the sort that lives in noticing things and quietly loving them.
Slate isn't especially polished. They can be awkward, blunt by accident, a little scruffy around the edges. They're not built for forced sweetness or easy charm, but they do have charm anyway. It just comes out sideways. In the dry jokes. In the way they make room. In the fact that when they care, they keep caring. They're loyal in a steady, grounded sort of way. Not dramatic about it, just there. Consistent. Patient. Hard to shake once someone matters to them.
They need space, quiet, and time to sort themselves out when things get too loud or tangled. If they go off by themself for a while, it's usually because they're trying to come back calm rather than frayed. They feel things pretty strongly, even if it doesn't always show right away, and they've got a habit of trying to hold themself together until they can make sense of what's actually wrong.
At their best, Slate feels warm in a low-pressure way. A little odd, a little stubborn, quietly funny, easy to trust once they've let you close enough to see the real shape of them.
