My rendition of a pony skeleton. This one's an alicorn just cause alicorns have all the parts. An earth pony, for example, wouldn't have the wing blades or horn, though they might have bones without sockets where wing blades would be if they were a pegasus, who knows. Still, I think it's the most decent work of art I've produced to date given the detail that went into it.

Is the horn vestigial? There's no accounting for earlier ancestors who might have been more inclined to gore their enemies rather than rely on it solely as a magical conduit. :o

It's also kind of stout, rounded and tapering to a nice point that could conceivably gore something with relative difficulty. :o

Vestigial kind of implies not used and degrading over generations. The horn still looks quite sturdy and unicorns use it all the time, even if it is used more magically than physically.

As far as goring an opponent, the horn isn't sharp, so it would be difficult to stab with it, but it could do considerable damage in a charge and withstand a lot of force, especially at the point. If it hits a soft spot rather than encountering another bone it could be quiet painful, but in melee range I suspect the hooves are more dangerous. The weakest, smallest bones are the ribs and spine, so they are most vulnerable to the sides, although being more flexible than a regular pony they can likely also turn to face an opponent or turn their back to them faster.

Because the anatomy is smoothed and simplified most of the bones in the legs ended up quite thick, so they can conceivably support some powerful musculature and take a great deal of force to break.

For the roundedness you have to look to Rarity's spa trips.  You see them filing down the horn so one would think that if they desired the horn could be sharpened to a point like Luna's or Celestia's.  Most likely it is rounded for personal/style reasons.  Also you can look at Fleur de Lis, her horn is just as sharp as the Princesses'.  This again lends more credence to the horn shape being a personal/style choice.
