I think they probably just prefer humanoid feet. I'm more of a purist of course. To be fair though, I think it depends on the continuity. Example: the live-action movie characters canonically have humanoid feet. I also tend to give it a pass in 3D/CG works. As for the canon 2D incarnations, I've actually grown fond of the simplified design. There's something of a cuteness factor to it. :3
