The Weight of Laughter
The afternoon sun beat down mercilessly on the Elephant Graveyard, turning the bleached bones into mirrors of shimmering heat. Shenzi lay sprawled across a sun-warmed ribcage, her spotted coat absorbing the warmth as she watched the shimmering horizon with half-lidded eyes. The day had been slow—no hunts, no drama, just the lazy contentment that came with a full belly and nothing pressing to do.
She heard him before she saw him—the heavy padding of paws against packed earth, accompanied by labored breathing that hadn't been there a few months ago. Shenzi's ears perked up, and she turned her head to watch Banzai lumber into view around a massive elephant skull.
The change in him was impossible to miss. Where once he'd been lean and rangy like most hyenas, Banzai had developed a considerable paunch that swayed with each step. His belly hung low, brushing against his legs as he walked, and his flanks had filled out considerably. Even his face looked rounder, his cheeks fuller, giving him an almost puppyish appearance despite his years.
"Hey, Shenzi," he panted, collapsing onto the ground near her with a heavy whump that sent up a small cloud of dust. His belly spread out before him like a furry cushion, rising and falling with his breathing.
"Well, well," Shenzi said, a grin spreading across her muzzle. "Look who finally decided to show up. What took you so long? It's only about a hundred yards from the den."
Banzai shot her a look, though there was no real heat in it. "Yeah, yeah, laugh it up. Some of us have been... enjoying the good life lately." He patted his belly with one paw, and the flesh rippled beneath his touch like water.
Shenzi's eyes followed the movement, fascinated. She'd noticed Banzai's weight gain over the past several weeks—it was hard to miss—but she hadn't really looked at it until now. The way his belly jiggled with even the slightest movement, how it pooled out around him when he lay down, the soft roundness that had replaced his once-angular frame...
Before she could stop herself, she was moving closer, her curiosity getting the better of her.
"What are you—" Banzai started, but cut off with a surprised grunt as Shenzi reached out and poked his belly with one paw.
The fat compressed beneath her touch, soft and yielding, and when she pulled her paw back, the flesh wobbled and jiggled for several seconds afterward. The ripples spread across his entire midsection, waves of motion that seemed to go on forever.
Shenzi let out a surprised laugh—that distinctive hyena cackle that was equal parts amusement and delight. "Oh my—did you see that? It just keeps going!"
"Hey!" Banzai protested, but there was a smile tugging at his muzzle. "That's—I mean—"
But Shenzi was already poking him again, this time with both paws, watching in fascination as his belly wobbled and shook. Each touch sent new ripples cascading across his rotund form, the fat jiggling hypnotically. She couldn't help it—she laughed again, that wild hyena laugh that came from deep in her chest.
And Banzai, despite his protests, found himself laughing too. Because that was what hyenas did—they laughed. It was in their nature, in their very bones, and hearing Shenzi's laughter was infectious. Soon they were both cackling, Shenzi continuing to poke and prod at his jiggly belly while Banzai's whole body shook with mirth, which only made his fat wobble more, which made them both laugh harder.
"It's like—" Shenzi gasped between giggles, giving his belly a gentle slap that sent it into a frenzy of motion, "—like it has a mind of its own! Look at it go!"
"Okay, okay," Banzai wheezed, trying to catch his breath. "You've had your fun. Can we—"
But he stopped when he noticed the way Shenzi was looking at him. Her laughter had faded to a soft chuckle, but her paws were still resting on his belly, and there was something different in her eyes. Something warm and... interested.
"Shenzi?" he asked quietly.
She blinked, and to his surprise, a faint blush colored her cheeks beneath her fur. "I... okay, this is going to sound weird, but..." She kneaded his belly gently with her paws, feeling the soft give of the fat beneath. "I actually find this really attractive."
Banzai's eyes widened. "You... what?"
"I know, I know," Shenzi said quickly, her blush deepening. "It's just... I don't know. There's something about it. You look so... comfortable. Content. And the way it moves..." She gave his belly another experimental poke, watching it jiggle. "It's mesmerizing. And you look good like this. Really good."
Banzai stared at her, his heart suddenly pounding in his chest. "Shenzi, I..."
She looked up at him, and their eyes met. For a moment, neither of them moved. Then, slowly, tentatively, Shenzi leaned forward.
Their muzzles met in a kiss that was soft and uncertain at first, then deeper, more confident. Banzai's eyes fluttered closed as he returned the kiss, one paw coming up to rest on Shenzi's shoulder. She pressed closer, her paws still resting on his belly, feeling it compress between them as they kissed.
When they finally pulled apart, both were breathing heavily, and both wore matching expressions of surprise and wonder.
"I've wanted to do that for so long," Banzai admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. "Shenzi, I... I've had a crush on you since we were cubs. Since before we even left our birth clan. I've always... you've always been the one I wanted."
Shenzi's eyes widened, and her blush returned full force. "Banzai..."
"I know you're our leader," he continued, the words tumbling out now that he'd started. "I know you're the queen, and you could have anyone you wanted. But I've always hoped... maybe someday..."
"Stop," Shenzi said gently, placing a paw on his muzzle. "Just... stop for a second and let me talk."
Banzai fell silent, his heart in his throat.
Shenzi took a deep breath. "You're not the only one who's been carrying a torch, you idiot. I've had a crush on you for years. You and Ed both."
"Both?" Banzai blinked in surprise.
"Both," Shenzi confirmed, nodding. "Why do you think I always chose you two to travel with me? To hunt with me? To be by my side no matter what?" She laughed softly. "There were other hyenas in our clan who were stronger, faster, better hunters. But I didn't choose them. I chose you two."
"I... I always wondered about that," Banzai admitted. "I mean, I'm not exactly the most impressive specimen." He gestured at his rotund form with a self-deprecating grin.
"That's where you're wrong," Shenzi said firmly. She moved closer, pressing against his side, her paw tracing gentle circles on his belly. "You want to know why I chose you and Ed? It wasn't because you were the strongest or the fastest. It was because you were the cutest—yes, cute, don't give me that look—and because you could make me laugh."
She rested her head on his shoulder, her voice growing softer. "Since our species is matriarchal—I'm at the top of the hierarchy, and that means I get to make the choices. I choose who travels with me, who hunts with me, who..." She paused, her blush returning. "Who gets to be my mates."
Banzai's breath caught. "Mates?"
"Mates," Shenzi confirmed. "And I chose you and Ed because you make me happy. Because when I'm with you, I laugh. And laughter... that's everything to a hyena. You know that."
"I do," Banzai said softly. He turned his head to nuzzle against her neck. "I've always loved making you laugh. Even when we were cubs, that was my favorite thing—seeing you happy."
"You're good at it," Shenzi murmured. "Both of you are. Ed with his crazy antics, and you with your sarcasm and your jokes and..." She poked his belly again, smiling as it jiggled. "And apparently now with this."
Banzai laughed, the sound rumbling through his chest and making his belly shake. "I didn't exactly plan this, you know. It just sort of... happened. We've been eating well lately, and I guess I got a little carried away."
"More than a little," Shenzi teased, running her paw over the expanse of his belly. "But I'm not complaining. Like I said... I find it attractive. There's something about it that just..." She trailed off, searching for the words. "It makes you look happy. Satisfied. Like you're living your best life. And that's incredibly appealing."
"I am happy," Banzai said, pulling her closer. "Especially now. Shenzi, I never thought... I mean, I always hoped, but I never actually believed you might feel the same way."
"Well, believe it," Shenzi said, tilting her head up to look at him. "I've wanted this for a long time. Both of you—you and Ed. That's why I kept you close all these years. I was just waiting for the right moment to tell you."
"And this is the right moment?" Banzai asked, a smile playing at his muzzle. "When I'm fat and out of shape and can barely walk a hundred yards without getting winded?"
"This is the perfect moment," Shenzi said firmly. She kissed him again, deeper this time, her paws kneading his soft belly. "Because you're happy, and you're comfortable with yourself, and you're here with me. That's all that matters."
They stayed like that for a long moment, pressed together in the afternoon heat, Shenzi's paws exploring Banzai's new curves while he held her close. The Elephant Graveyard was silent around them except for the occasional whisper of wind through the bones and the soft sounds of their breathing.
"So," Banzai said eventually, a teasing note entering his voice, "does this mean I should keep the weight on? Since you find it so attractive?"
Shenzi laughed, that wonderful hyena cackle that made Banzai's heart soar. "You can do whatever makes you happy. But..." She gave his belly a playful slap, watching it wobble. "I wouldn't complain if you stayed like this. Or even got bigger. There's just more of you to love."
"More of me to love," Banzai repeated, grinning. "I like the sound of that."
"Good," Shenzi said, snuggling closer. "Because I plan on doing a lot of loving. You and Ed both. That's the privilege of being queen—I get to choose my mates, and I choose you two. The ones who make me laugh, the ones who make me happy, the ones I've wanted since we were cubs."
"Lucky us," Banzai murmured, nuzzling her ear.
"Lucky me," Shenzi corrected. "I get two mates who adore me, who make me laugh every day, and who..." She poked his belly one more time, giggling as it jiggled. "Who provide endless entertainment."
Banzai laughed, his whole body shaking with mirth, his belly wobbling and jiggling in that hypnotic way that had started this whole thing. Shenzi joined in, her laughter mixing with his, the two of them cackling together in the fading afternoon light.
Because that was what hyenas did. They laughed. And now, finally, they had even more reason to laugh—because they had each other, and they had love, and they had the promise of a future together.
As the sun began to set over the Elephant Graveyard, painting the bleached bones in shades of orange and gold, Shenzi and Banzai lay together in comfortable silence, her head resting on his soft belly, his paw draped over her shoulders. They would need to find Ed soon, to share this news with him, to bring him into this new dynamic they were creating.
But for now, this moment was theirs alone—a moment of confession, of acceptance, of love finally acknowledged after years of secret longing.
And if Shenzi occasionally poked Banzai's belly just to watch it jiggle, and if that made them both dissolve into laughter again, well... that was just perfect. Because laughter was what hyenas did best, and love that could make you laugh was the best kind of love there was.
"Hey, Shenzi?" Banzai said softly as the stars began to appear overhead.
"Yeah?"
"Thank you. For choosing me. For wanting me. Even like this." He patted his belly self-consciously.
Shenzi lifted her head to look at him, her eyes warm and full of affection. "Especially like this," she corrected. "You're perfect, Banzai. You always have been. I'm just glad I finally got the courage to tell you."
"Me too," Banzai said, pulling her up for another kiss. "Me too."
And as they kissed beneath the rising moon, surrounded by the ancient bones of the Elephant Graveyard, two hyenas who had loved each other in secret for years finally found the happiness they'd been seeking all along—in each other's arms, in each other's laughter, and in the simple joy of being together at last.
The weight Banzai had gained had been the catalyst, the thing that had finally broken down the walls between them and allowed them to confess their feelings. And for that, neither of them would ever regret a single pound. Because it had brought them here, to this moment, to this love.
And that was worth more than all the successful hunts and all the territory in the Pride Lands combined.
As they settled in for the night, Shenzi curled against Banzai's side with her head pillowed on his soft belly, both of them knew that tomorrow would bring new challenges, new adventures, and the task of bringing Ed into their newly-acknowledged relationship. But tonight, they had this—this perfect moment of peace and love and contentment.
And really, what more could any hyena ask for?
