The air was cold in the lands of Eden, it was an important day: it was Frostfall, and for some their first Frostfall.
Dawn woke earlier that morning, his small form stretching before quickly receding back under his comforter, retreating from the frigid bite of the now winter air. Opening his eyes blearily, his eyes taking a moment to adjust as he sat up shivering.
Braving the cold he went about his morning routine until something outside the window caught his eye: the ground was white. Quickly he rushed out to the living room seeing his siblings happily giggling and rushing outside, his dad quickly shutting the door behind them to keep the warmer air of the living room in.
Slowly walking down the hallways and into the living room proper he noticed two things, it was warmer here, meaning the fire was lit, which was a first for him that he could remember and two his father was looking expectantly at him.
“Dad? What's going on, why’s there white stuff on the ground outside?” he asked inquisitively, his tail faintly twitching as it still did, he hadn't quite grown out of that phase of his young life just yet, much to his embarrassment.
“You’ll see, Dawn.” his father smiled proudly, and lightly petted his head, motioning him to the kitchen table where a warm plate of pancakes and fruits awaited him, mostly citrus fruits, his favorites.
His mother didn't say anything for a moment, she just sat at the table and watched him eat a small smile gracing her face before she began to explain. “Well little one, today is a special day, its frostfall, a day when all of our homeland starts to get colder and as you so described it there's ‘white stuff’ on the ground, that’s called snow by the way. You've seen it before but I think you were too young to remember.” She laughed a little before continuing.
“Youre going to need to get used to the cold dear because you’ll get plenty of it when you can fly up high so today your dads going to take you outside to play in it, but don't worry you’ll have fun, everyone does” while she explained, Dawn quietly ate his breakfast nodding at what she told him, not quite understanding fully but resolved to see for himself.
Once breakfast was polished off his father stood and walked towards the door, his mother motioning for Dawn to follow along, which he did, curiosity being his driving force for the day it seems.
The moment his dad opened the door, his shivering began anew, but not wanting to disappoint his parents, he soldiered on, trudging outside. Or he began to the moment the cold snow touched his feet he leaped backwards back through the doorway making his father laugh rather loudly which made Dawn glare at him, a rather cute spectacle given his small size.
After a brief moment of respite, and after his dad got himself under control once more, the young dragon walked outside, marveling at how the snow felt under his foot, how it made a crunching sound, how soft it was, how alien it was.
He didn't have much time to consider this as he quickly felt something being draped round his neck and shoulders. A strange red fabric that was definitely a big big for him, and yet, it felt familiar, like meeting an old friend after a long time.
“You may not understand this just yet, but this scarf protected you before, and it will do so from now on son” his father commented as he tied the scarf behind Dawn’s neck while the young dragon simply tilted his head and lifted the garment with a hand.
Dawn stared dumbly at his new adornment, he didn't know why, but his body instinctively seemed to tell him, this belonged to him, it was his and would only be his. He lightly ran his fingers over the smooth silk-like surface, it felt a little odd and itchy.
This is a small story about Dawn's first frostfall. (the fist Snowfall of the year in Eden) If you know Dawn then you will understand what this story means, and its significance.
