I never saw the remake but I believe there was something about "The Thing" that made it look different from humans. It the original movie (starring James Arness as the Thing), it was obvious. It looked like a walking plant (minus leaves).

They were quoting the original movie. But in the "remake" (actually was a prequel not a remake) they figured out it could only replicate organic material so no metals. Piercings and tooth fillings is how they could for sure tell someone was human.

Are you sure the newer movie was a prequel? I never saw it (as I said), but in the 1950s version, a group of scientists discovered a perfectly round LARGE circle in the arctic ice and a "ship" frozen in the ice. They cut the ship out of the ice and brought it back to their research station. I also remember that the scientists figured out a way to test people to see if they were, in fact, the thing. I believe it had something to do with electricity or heat. It's been more years than I care to admit to since I saw the 1950s version, so I may not remember everything clearly.
