Owen settled onto the cool stone rocks near the edge of the pond, the folds of his kimono draping naturally around him. He let his hands rest at his sides, palms open against the smooth stone, feeling the faint vibration of the waterfall through it. The night air carried a gentle chill, softened by the warm glow of lanterns flickering on either side of the path.

The koi drifted beneath him in slow, unhurried arcs, white, gold, and ember-red shapes gliding through the moonlit water. Each time one surfaced near his reflection, Owen’s ears tilted forward just a little, as if he didn’t want to miss a single moment of their quiet grace.

He leaned back slightly, letting the mist from the waterfall brush across his muzzle. The sound of the falls wasn’t loud; it was steady, rhythmic, something that seemed to settle into his chest and smooth out the thoughts he’d been carrying all day.

A firefly drifted past his knee, then another. Their soft green glow danced across the surface of the pond, mixing with the lantern light and the shimmer of the koi until the whole scene felt like it was breathing with him.

Owen exhaled, slow and easy. Sitting there, hands relaxed, kimono sleeves brushing the stone, koi swirling like living lanterns below, he felt a rare kind of stillness. Not empty. Just… peaceful.
