The courtyard was quiet except for the fountain’s soft rush, moonlight pooling across the stone like silver paint. Kenji and Thomas had wandered out here after dinner, neither of them ready to call it a night, both pretending they weren’t waiting for the other to say it first.
Thomas nudged Kenji’s shoulder with a grin.
“Bet I can balance on that fountain edge longer than you.”
Kenji blinked, tail flicking. “Thomas… that’s slippery. And tall. And...” But Thomas was already climbing up, wobbling dramatically like a baby deer on ice.
“Behold! A master of, whoa, grace and, Kenji, help...!”
Kenji darted forward, grabbing Thomas by the sleeve before he toppled straight into the water. Thomas froze, arms pinwheeling, then slowly leaned back into Kenji’s steady grip.
“…I had it under control,” Thomas said, absolutely lying. Kenji snorted, an actual snort, and covered his muzzle with both paws. “You did not.”
Thomas lit up at the sound. “There it is! The Kenji Snort of Truth.” “Stop calling it that,” Kenji groaned, ears flattening, but he was smiling too hard to hide it.
They ended up sitting on the fountain’s edge anyway, feet dangling, shoulders pressed together. Thomas kept bumping Kenji’s knee with his own, just lightly, like a rhythm only the two of them knew. Kenji pretended to be annoyed, but every time Thomas stopped, he nudged back.
After a while, Thomas glanced over.
“You okay? You seemed a little quiet earlier.”
Kenji hesitated, then nodded. “I’m okay. Just… tired. But being here with you helps.”
Thomas softened instantly. “Then we stay right here. No balancing acts. No falling into fountains. Just us.”
Kenji leaned his head against Thomas’s shoulder, shy at first, then fully settling in when Thomas didn’t move away.
“You’re goofy,” Kenji murmured.
“And you love it,” Thomas replied, bumping his head gently against Kenji’s.
Kenji didn’t deny it.
The moon climbed higher, the fountain kept singing, and the two of them stayed there, goofy, caring, and perfectly at ease in each other’s orbit.
