These gemstone magic staves creates "life essence" that grants you and your allies a different buff. Each staff has it's own unique attack and life essence effect.

The sapphire staff, for example, is the weakest due to being early-game and projectiles being way too slow, but it's also the best since it heals you and your allies for a great amount.
