In response to that last panel - years ago, I saw a drawing tablet that had a fill option. It was probably fairly low-tech and primitive, but the artist drew a house, yard, clouds, etc. Then he touched a key with the light pen, and after selecting the colors, he tapped the sections of the picture. I guess the color fill recognized the lines of the pen as borders, because he was able to rapidly color the image. Do the modern drawing tablets not offer something like this? I know your work is far greater quality with layers, but could it not at least do the base colors quickly?
