It seems that after their escape into the forest from the archery tournament, Maid Marian lived with Robin Hood and his friends, helping to look after their camp and minister to the poor villagers who came to them for aid.

One day, desiring a bath, and taking care to choose a time when none were likely to see her, she ventured out to a cool, clear pool not far from camp, slipped out of her maiden's clothing, laid them carefully beneath a beech tree, and waded into the purling water. She grit her fangs as she did, for even though it was midsummer, the shock of cold water still set her fur on end.

The shock was soon over however, and in no time at all Maid Marian had lost herself in reverie as she swam and splashed with ease. Ah, how much more invigorating was this woodland bath than that of the draughty castle! How sweet life was, how merry! The kiss of water against her fur, the winking sun between the summer leaves, the birdsong, the insects chirping in the grass, and of course the certainty that she was loved by Robin himself -- he who loved her more than life itself. There was only this. All else was unreal.

So intoxicated was she in her thoughts that she did not realise how far she had drifted from the beech tree until she was ready to return to camp. It was then that her bliss gave way to horror. All of her clothing had disappeared!

At once she sank into the water again, panting and wondering what to do. Should she call for help? What if the wrong person heard her?

'Robin!' she called softly.

There was no response.

'Robin!' she called louder. 'Wherever you are, come quickly, please! Robin!'

At last there came the crunch of footsteps and the rustle of ferns. Maid Marian stiffened, unsure who it was that would emerge from the thicket, but then sighed when she saw that it was indeed none other than her one true love.

'Oh!' gasped Robin, blushing and turning quickly away. 'I am terribly sorry, please forgive me, I hadn't... erm... realised that...'

'Robin, please, someone has taken my clothes,' she whimpered. 'I... I don't know what to do.'

'It's a long way back to camp,' Robin said quietly, still taking care to keep his eyes averted. 'You are lucky I happened to be passing by this way. There was word that an enemy had passed this way, and I was on his trail.'

'And lucky too that this enemy did not seem to spot me when he found my clothes,' Marian said. 'But what shall we do?'

'I dare not leave you here alone,' Robin said. 'Here, you must take my clothes for now.'

Even as he spoke, he had tossed aside his feathered cap and unbuckled his belt. 'Do forgive me,' he muttered, taking hold of his collar and gingerly pulling off his tunic. 'It is never my intention to make you feel uncomfortable.'

Marian's eyes widened. Her love was standing now before her clad only in his pants and shoes. How sleek he looked! How fit! Then she caught herself and quickly turned her eyes away, just as he had done. 'You aren't... making me... uncomfortable...' she murmured. She could not help smiling.

Still taking care to keep his eyes shut, Robin handed her his tunic. It fit surprisingly well... and it smelled as he did of woodsmoke and earth. She dreaded when she would have to take it off again.

'How is it?' Robin asked. 'May I open my eyes now?'

Marian giggled. 'You may, good sir.'

Robin paused when he saw her dressed in his own green tunic. Then his eyes brightened and he smiled. 'I shall have to retire now,' he chuckled. 'I daresay it suits you better than it does me.'

'You'll have to teach me everything you know then.' Marian found herself becoming more and more excited. 'Put a bow in my hand. Give me a sword. I'll help you fight the Sheriff.'

Robin did not answer right away. 'I dread to think of someone hurting you,' he said. 'If something happened to you, Marian, I...'

Marian placed her paw upon his chest. The firmness of his body sent a little shiver through her blood. He stiffened at the touch, perhaps conscious of how exposed he was before her in the sparse undergarment which was his only clothing. Then he relaxed and let out a sigh. He placed his own paw over hers and met her gaze.

'You're right,' he said. 'You ought to learn. It is only fitting that you should wear the Lincoln green of our merry band.' His smile returned. 'Let us start with tracking down that thief who stole your clothes.'

Marian laughed. 'Perhaps we ought to start with finding something for you to wear first.'
