Cub Scout

Summer camp has always been one of the wolf's favorite time of the year; not only did he get out of school for a few months, but he also got to do a bunch of outdoor activities away from his parents and his sisters. He could be around other boys, which he desperately needed in a house with three sisters and no brothers.

When he became old enough to work at the summer camp, Kody the wolf was thrilled that he was accepted to take the position of a camp counselor. He had worked there the previous year, and now at seventeen years old, the wolf was waking up an early morning when he expected the next batch of scouts to arrive.

The cub scouts that arrived that was scheduled to camp near his campsite were a bunch of ten year olds. A cheetah and white-furred fox were the first to step off and they seemed quite close, a caracal cub with a well-groomed jackal cub, two mice that looked to be twin brothers, and lastly a red fox who had his eyes glued to the ground.

Arriving with them was their scout master, and two other fathers that were chaperoning the cubs. Kody greeted them, gave them a quick introduction, the rules, and tour of the entrance before hiking toward their campground.

There he ordered the that the cubs were required to pair off, two per tent. Just as they exited the bus, the pairs quickly formed, leaving the red fox the odd cub out. The caracal scout master was busy with one of the chaperones over the squabbling cubs, fighting over the best camp spots. The father of the mice twins seemed to be actively ignoring the red fox that stood silently nearby.

It was clear that the fox was feeling left out; his ears were down, and his eyes looked like they were on the verge of tearing up since no one was volunteering to share a tent with him. Kody pitied the poor thing so he walked up to the fox.

"Hey," Kody greeted him.

"Hi...." the fox responded timidly, barely meeting the wolf's gaze.

"The others already seem to know who they're sharing a tent with," Kody remarked.

"Yeah...." the fox simply responded, looking around seeing the cubs and chaperones seemingly ignoring him.

Poor thing, Kody thought. He wasn't really expecting the fox to be so timid. "I have an idea," Kody said, the fox barely looking up at him again. "My tent is not far from here. I'll share my tent with you."

...

The fox looked around at the others, seeming to weigh his options before muttering, "...Okay..."

Kody felt the urge to at least try to cheer the fox up. "Though I have to tell you a secret," Kody said, kneeling down in front of the fox. "It's the best spot so if the others ask, tell them it sucks!" The fox looked at him a bit confused. "Otherwise they'll be jealous!"

The fox's ears finally rose, and Kody could almost swear he could see a slight smile on him. "Okay!"

Taking care of seven rambunctious boys alone is going to be hard work for the teen wolf. They’re liable to push him over the edge. But with a firm paw I’m sure he can earn their trust, take hold of the situation and leave them all thoroughly satisfied. It’ll be an opportunity to teach them some important life skills boys need to know. Maybe the more adventurous among them will find time to earn some of their merit badges too (like wood working, breath holding, face painting, or knot tying for example). By the end of the trip he’s going to be worn down to the bone…

Seven boys is a lot to keep an eye on and juggle! Scouts are all about teaching boys important life lessons so let's hope the teen is up to the challenge. Those merit badges will certainly drain the wolf's... stamina!

The wolf also needs to make sure all the boys get to participate in the activities, so his focus may be on the left out fox cub for a while. He may come to view the fox cub as a cute little brother. Poor fox cub just wants a mentor that he can look up to and provide comfort and support. :3

That’s good of him to take the fox cub under his wing (and under the rest of him). It wouldn’t be fair if a boy got left out. If the others have already paired off, Wolfy only needs to supervise their activities, making sure they have lots of fun but without anyone getting hurt.

It’s a boy’s life! ☺️
