Tracker sped through the jungle with the other pups not far behind him. He swung his jeep every which way. His priority was to ensure Rex and the others were safe. That they wouldn’t get hurt like Carlos did

“Whoa! Tracker! Look out!”

Tracker turned his wheel sharp, Avoiding the stomping feet of a T-rex. The normally dominate king of dinosaurs seemed to be running away. The others veered their vehicles from his path as well.

“”That was a close one.” Rubble barked.

“What was he running from?” Chase asked.

Tracker wanted to respond but his ears caught the sound of thunderous stomping coming between the trees.

“Cuidado! I don’t think he’s the only one running!”

The team watched as the trees parted and a number of dinosaurs came sprinting towards them. The pups implemented evasive maneuvers. Chase rocketed passed some stegosauruses while Zuma swept next to some velociraptors.

“Whoa! Careful dudes!” Zuma barked. Maneuvering behind Rocky.

“What’s going on?” Rocky questioned.

“What ever is out there! It’s scaring off half of the Dino wilds” Rubble cried out.

“Oi, Oi, Oi.. We got to get to the ruins faster.” Tracker said. He floored his jeep and the others followed suite. Passing the devastated forest and the fleeing dinosaurs behind them.

Rex immediately shoved Skye to one side as the Spinosaurus charged at them. It’s head slamming upwards into the stone structure above. Showering the pups in rocks and pebbles.

“Skye! You good?”

“Yeah! I’m alright!”

They watched as the angry Dino sniffed at the fossil sight. Rex took note of how the dinosaur moved. It’s eyes twitched and it’s claws clicked nervously. It was upset clearly, but about what exactly?

“Rex! Skye!”

The five pups pulled to a stop near what remained of the ruins. Tracker immediately leapt out from his jeep to approach the pair. The Spino noticed the pups pull up to the site and let out another loud roar. The sound echoed off the trees and Tracker bent his ears down in pain. He saw the enormous red Spinosaurus. It’s form towering even the largest dinosaur Tracker had seen so far.

“Gigante!”

“Duck! Chase screamed. The three pups dropped low as the beast swung it’s tail towards them. Tracker kept his eye out for a clear shot before barking out his cables. He held on to both pups as he reeled himself up on what remained of the stone pillars. Sending them flying and stumbling towards the rest of the team.

“Are you two ok?!” Rubble cried out.

“Yip! Close call.”

“Dude, That’s one angry dinosaur.”

“I don’t think it’s angry!” Rex cried out aloud.

Before the pups could questioned him, the Spinosaurus growled in distress. Roaring louder as it made it’s way towards what remained of the trees.

“What’s are they looking for?”

“I don’t know. They are really upset though.”

“Okay, Well that plan didn’t go as well as I thought.” He joked.

A new voice caught the teams attention from the ruins. They were met with the sight of a familiar ten year old boy. His clothes dirty and tore in places.

“Ryder!!!”

The pups could have tackled the boy in absolute joy but they held back. Seeing Ryder was looking a little less for wear.

Chase shined his flashlight on the longs symbols that adorned the large wall within the ruins. The symbols depicted pictures of dinosaurs and humans. Some inscriptions were very faded. Some were draped over with long strands of red vines. Bright crimson flowers protruding from them. Tracker was in awe at the what the wall depicted. He lifted a paw and traced it down against some of the inscribed pictures. Rex walked next to him, Also engrossed in what they depicted.

“There were people in the Dino wilds?”

“Looks like it. Dr. T had hypothesized that there were people here some time ago.” Rex said.

“And it looks like they were living with dinosaurs too. And wait, Is that…”

“The ruins, The ones were standing in.”

Tracker leaned up. Lifting himself on his hind legs and looked close at the bright symbol that adored it.

“That looks...familiar.”

“I’ve absolutely seen that symbol too before.”

Rex tilted his head in confusion only for Tracker to yelp in shock.

“Médico!”

“Medico? Like medical? Like…”

Rex finally caught on.

“Oh!”

The other pups stared at the pair.

“What’s it mean?” Rocky asked.

The pair barked in unison.

“It’s a vet clinic!”

“Huh?” Every other pup raised an ear in confusion.

“A hospital for dinosaurs! Excelente!”

“Exactly.” Ryder said. He leaned into the wall and pointed out a few specific features.

“When I followed Carlos down here. He had finally figured out that this place was used to house and nurse injured dinosaurs. Humans would bring them here to treat them.”

He pulled a flower from the wall. Leaning down to let Tracker get a sniff. His eyes lighting up.

“Flor de la pasión”

Rex picked up on his Spanish.

“Flower of passion?”

“Passion Flower. It’s a sedative used to treat animals sometimes.” Ryder commented.

“Medicamento”

“Agreed. It seems like the Spinosaurus had been making this abandoned vet it’s home for a long time now.”

“Dr. T theorized that the Spinosaurus was nocturnal. Only coming out at night to feed on fish in large bodies of water” Rex pondered.

“That explains why you all haven’t seen it before. When Carlos went it further into the ruins, he discovered it sleeping. I had arrived to check on him and we both had talked about reaching out to Dr. Turbot to try and examine the Spinosaurus from a distance but…”

He poke at his torn vest and chuckled. Trying to make light of the situation.

“Things didn’t exactly go to plan. When Dr. Turbot had arrived, the Spino had woken up. I don’t think it appreciated us being there.”

“Talk about territorial.” Zuma added.

“Yeah, It had begone to throw a fit. Slamming itself into the walls and accidentally injuring Carlos.”

Tracker whined at hearing that. He was happy his best friend was safe and far from this place.

“Dr. Turbot had thankfully pulled him out of here while I stayed inside to hide out. Now it looks like the commotion it’s caused has disturbed the peace of the Dino Wilds.”

Rex began to pace a little. Without Doctor Turbot or Tammy here to hypothesize a diagnosis for the dinosaurs behavior, he had to figure it out himself.

“What’s wrong Rex?” Tracker asked.

“It doesn’t make sense. Dinosaurs usually have domain in caves and specific plains.” Rex pondered even further.

“Then why would it choose to stay here specifically?” Tracker asked. Rex was at a loss as well. He thought about the Spinosaurus's reaction to the fossils outside and tapped his paw against the stone floor in worry. He remembered how it looked. He eyed the symbols on the wall. Recognizing some as humans and other dinosaurs though he had noticed an image in particular that stood out. Half of it obscured by the red vines. He walked up, Pushing passed the vines and seeing the resemblance of a volcano. Fire spewing from it’s chasm. The group gasped at the image.

“Whoa! Looks like an eruption happened at some point.” Zuma said.

“that must have been really scary.” Rubble whined out loud.

Below the volcano was scuffed out portrait of what looked to be a heard of T-rex. Rex found that strange. It’s not often you’d see a group of them. T-rex have a mate for life but tend to have one offspring. Plus the proportions were all wrong. They were bent down more, Their claws were longer and there was a wide growth on their backs. The portrait as whole depicted these creatures feeling from the volcano. Almost as if...

A terrible realization had come to him. Rex and taken a few steps back. Stumbling into Tracker. The jungle pup yelp in surprise and held on to his friend.

“Rex?¿Estás bien?”

Rex only looked at Tracker for a moment. The jungle pup could see how sad he was but before he could question him further, he wiped his watering eyes and looked to Ryder. A determined look on his face.

“Ryder, We have to find the Spinosaurus. I’ll use whatever dialect I know to try and communicate with it.”

He flinched at an unusual sensation against one of his paws. His face brighten at the sight of Tracker who held his own paw against his.

“I’ve got your back.” He assured.

“So do we!”

The other pups howled in response. Ryder smiled at the support his team gave the pair.

“Alright, Here’s the plan.”

Skye, Zuma, Rocky, Rubble and Chase were tasked with scouting the forest for any injured dinosaurs. Making sure they were rescued and taken to Dr. Turbots clinic. Ryder would stay by the ruins and have Taylor come out to assist. Rex and Tracker were assigned to try and locate the dinosaur. With the jungle pup’s tracking skills and Rex’s Dino talk, He was confident that the pair could find the Spinosaurus and try to reason with them. Rex rode in Trackers jeep, his Dino claw keeping him in place as his wheels rocked back and forth with every turn Tracker took.

“Lo siento! The path is a wreck.”

“No problem!” Rex assured.

Tracker listened as close as he could, Between the other pups using their vehicles to lift up fallen trees and assisting other dinosaurs. Tracker caught the cry of the raging Spinosaurus.

“It sounds like it’s coming from over there.” He lifted his paw and pointed.

“There’s a river bank around there! Let’s take a look.”

Tracker drove out of the forest and ran his jeep along the bank of the river. Sure enough, the pair saw the beast. It’s large spine poking up from the water. It’s tail swaying back and forth as it swam against the current.

“Tracker, Get as close to the bank as you can. I’m gonna use my claw to hop onto it!”

“Be careful Rex.” Tracker begged. He kept his eyes on the bank. Wanting so bad to turn and watch his friend land safely but he couldn’t. His twitched as a gentle paw patted his head.

“Always.” Rex smiled in confidence reassurance. Tracker didn’t turn to smile back but smiled to himself.

With that, Rex carefully positioned himself and Tracker matched the speed of the dinosaur as it swam. Rex barked and sent his Dino claw towards the spine of the dinosaur. Leaping at the same time. Tracker gasped as he watched his friend leap from the jeep. Rex was inches from the water just as his claw gripped the spine of the beast. Rex reeled himself in. His back wheels skidded on the bumpy red scales. Tracker cried out as Rex almost lost his balance. He carefully scooted forward. Getting as close as he could to the swimming Spino's head. Tracker listened as the pup growled and roared in different ways. His pitch going high and low as he desperately tried to reach the beast. The Spino raised it head out loud. It bellowed and turned suddenly. Sinking it’s claws and massive feet towards the left side of the bank. Tracker sharply turned his jeep. Avoiding being stepped on, but losing control of the vehicle. He braced as he veered into the side of the bank. The whole thing almost toppling in. Tracker watched as Rex held on tight as the beast walked passed the slope and back towards the trees. Tracker floored it but his back tires sank into the muddy bank. He pressed down as hard as he could. Flinging mud all over himself. He was very much stuck but refused to leave his friend by himself.

“Rex!”

Tracker barked out his cables and began swing along the trees. Quickly snapping through the broken branches and splintered wood. He didn’t care if one missed grip would send him plummeting down. He had to make sure Rex was okay. He manage to stay just behind the Spino. Swinging backwards and landing on the base of the tail. He gripped tightly as he was swung around. Pulling himself forward and running clumsily up the Spino’s back. He made his way towards Rex. The two wheeled pup saw Tracker struggling to keep balance and eased his Dino claw to wheel backwards. He reached a paw towards Tracker. The jungle pup taking it and pulling him close.

“Tracker?!”

“I wanted to make sure you were okay! I won’t leave you!”

“Tracker…” Rex cooed.

The boys heard the Spino bellow again. Rex gasped and felt his Dino claw lose it’s grip as the Spino shook violently. Tracker braced himself and felt Rex’s wheels run into him full force. They tumbled off the Spino. Tracker wrapped himself tight around Rex as they hit the ground. Dirt floured into the air and on their fur. Rex let out a loud yip and Tracker heard the sound of flaking metal and straps whipping about. As the jungle pup opened his eyes, He scanned the scene around him. There was one of the massive foot prints left behind by the Spinosaurus, sat Rex. One of his back tires had popped off and he didn’t move.

“Rex!”

Tracker raced to him. Ignoring the pain in his paws as he quickly coddled his friend.

“Rex! Rex! Are you okay?”

Rex slowly opened his eyes, giving a dull smile towards Tracker.

“Tracker...I….I…”

“Yes?” He quivered.

“I...I can’t feel my legs.”

Tracker bit his lip, Choking back a chuckle and sob.

“Not funny.”

“Then why are you smiling?”

Tracker wanted to complain. He wanted to cry and hug Rex tight but he noticed a steady tear running along his brown eyes that ran down his black and white fur.

“¿Lágrimas? “Why are you crying? Are you hurt?”

“Cause she is mourning.”

“What?”

Rex laid his head back against the mud. Looking up towards the sky.

“I tried every word I could mutter in Dino talk. Everything she spoke was foreign to me. Except the last one she yelled at the river.”

Rex let the tears roll down his snout.

“Alone.”

“Alone?”

“Tracker, Those fossils at the ruins. I think that’s her kin. Her family. I don’t know what exactly happened but...I think she was spared. While the rest of her pack was...was…”

Tracker thought back to the image on the wall. The erupting volcano, the dinosaurs below it. Rex tried to steady his breathing.

“She not angry. She’s scared. She’s scared because she’s the only one of her left. That’s horrible.”

Tracker rearrange himself. Laying down onto Rex’s lower half. Settling his head against his chest. Rex instinctively laid his paws against his friends ears as he spoke.

“I want to tell her it’s okay. That she isn’t alone. That I know what it’s like...what it’s like to be scared. To be on your own….but I can’t. I can’t reach her. I just...I’m the expert out here, I should be able to help her but I can’t I…”

The Bernese mountain pup let his composure fall and he began to snob harder.

“All this destruction. All this is because I can’t help her.”

The jungle pup slowly leaned his snout forward pressing it to the side of Rex’s face. The jungle pup suppressed his own sadness and spoke.

“Rex. You are one of the bravest pups I know. You jumped in without hesitation to take care of the wildlife out here. You are doing you’re best, that alone is kindness enough. I know you aren’t going to give up on her.”

Tracker licked one of Rex’s tears off his snout.

“And I won’t either. Even if I have to carry you myself. I’ll swing us both through the trees until we reach her. Let her know she is safe.”

Rex sniffled and leaned his head into Tracker. He didn’t care if this was too affectionate or not. He just loved how tender and thoughtful he was being right now. Tracker leaned his snout into his neck. The boys at bliss with one another. They stayed like that for a little while. Tracker knew they would have to report to Ryder about what had happened but he enjoyed their moment for one minute longer.

“Tracker. Thank you.”

“Anytime...Hermoso.”

“Heheh, what does that mean anyhow?”

“Oh, um...it...”

Tracker bit his tongue. Perhaps now wasn’t the time for a confession but when Rex met his gaze, the Bernese mountain pup smile knowingly at him. Seeming to already know the answer. Tracker felt his heart skip. Only to be cut off when the sound of thundering foot steps came walking towards them. The beast didn’t stomp or roar but slowly watched the boys as it approached. Tracker was about to bark out for his cables before Rex stopped him. The Spino simply leaned down and looked at the pair. Not in rage or fury but in familiarity. Especially towards Rex. The pup pulled himself forward. Dragging his broken wheels behind him. Tracker was on edge, Ready to pounce if the Spino dare tried to snap at his friend. The dinosaur simply watched as Rex looked up at her in the eyes and breathed a heavy sigh.

“You came back, you recognized this sad crying pup huh? Not my best look.” He joked.

Rex slowly lifted a paw up towards her snout.

“Cause I thought I recognized those eyes too. You were there weren’t you? The night I was all alone. You were the one who saved me.”

The Spino breathed in, Exhaling loudly.

“If you can understand anything, please know that it’s so good to see you again and...I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I know why you never left those ruins. You never wanted to be away from your family. Never wanted to be left alone. Maybe that’s why you saved me that night? So I wouldn’t have be all by myself too?”

Rex leaned into the Spinosaurus massive snout. Trying his best to wrap his paws around it in a comforting embrace.

“Just know that you aren’t alone”

Tracker slowly approached the Spino and put his paw up to her snout too.

“Usted no está solo.”

“Let me help you. Let me mourn with you. Please?”

The spinosaurs seemed to understand them. She saliently nodded to the pair.

“Alright, We got some of injured stegosaurus here.” Ryder asked.

“Rubble, move her carefully over there.” Taylor called out.

“On it!”

Rubble used his bulldozer to lift the injured Dino towards a safe space. Rocky did the same with his forklift for a triceratops. At the same time, Skye landed her jet. Letting a few raptor babies run out from her cockpit and towards a larger raptor who greeted them gently.

“There you are mama! Your babies are safe and sound.”

“Chase, Have we checked the river bank yet?” Ryder asked from his tablet.

“Me and Zuma are heading there now sir!”

“Alright, let’s…”

A dull quiet settled around the make shift camp as the familiar thumps of the Spinosaurus came from the trees. Soon enough they saw the massive creature poke it’s head through the brush. Ryder was going to advise everyone to clear out but stopped when he noticed a familiar pair of pups riding along the neck of the creature.

“Tracker! Rex!” They called out.

The pair slid themselves down her back. Tracker carefully carrying Rex on his own.

“Hey guys, It’s okay. We got her under control.”

“Mirar!”

Tracker pointed towards the Spino who slowly approached what remained of the fossilized sight. She hung her head down low. The team watched as a barely visible tear ran down her massive green eye.

“Tracker, Can you…”

“On it.”

The pair approached the Spino. Tracker letting Rex off and positioning himself to sit next to her. He gently placed a paw against one of her massive legs. Offering her comfort. The Spino bellowed out one loud sorrowful cry. The other dinosaurs around the camp, both big and small, began to follow suite. Each getting louder than the next. Rex felt tears well in his eyes and he too began to roar with the Spinosaurus. Tracker leaned into his friend. Holding him tight. Ensuring no matter their endeavor, the situation or the sorrow they felt. No one, no pup, an no dinosaur would ever be alone to mourn.

Dino Tracks (TrackerXRex) CH 4: A Curious Era
Last in pool
When a strange mystery occurs at the Dino wilds, Tracker, Carlos and the Paw Patrol are called to assist! However, with Ryder and his pups delayed in their arrival. Tracker finds himself spending some one on one time with the excited Dino pup. Leading to a new friendship, and possibly something more.

Big thanks to @lightspeedthepup for the incredible art as always. I hope you all enjoy. :)
