Otis had been doing some chores outside Slither's house, alongside his siblings. But one day, he felt troubled by his past, and he decided to go outside for some fresh air. He tried to clear his head to know his new reality, but sometimes the past comes back to haunt him. He looked down, sighing, when he heard slithering and saw Slither approaching him.
"What are you doing out here, Otis?" Slither asked. "You haven't finished washing the dishes from breakfast."
Otis sighed. "I'm sorry, Slither, but I was just thinking."
"Thinking? Of what, exactly?"
Otis gulped. "Remember I told you how my past was from another town, sir?"
"Yes, you had told me that when we first met."
"Well, the part where I told you about me hanging out with delinquents for two years, I..." Otis then sighed. "Slither, I'm not gonna lie. I do know how wrong it was to hang out with those who do bad things, but for thirteen years, I had been picked on and rejected for wearing my diapers, and no one wanted to be my friend. And I've been starving on the streets to where I had to steal bread, and I know it was very wrong of me to do so, but I had no choice. And when those delinquents found me, and taught me to steal to survive..." he sighed again. "Slither... I know what I did was wrong, joining them and stealing to survive. Believe me, I didn't want to be a delinquent, but I also didn't have a choice. I felt so guilty for being a delinquent, and then when Skylar came to me, and showed me how I can be much better without them. She once told me I deserve better, and I think that opened my eyes there, and she got me to leave those delinquents. Do you think I did the right thing, sir?"
Slither was quiet at hearing Otis tell him about his past. He then said, "Otis, not everyone has a happy start. What you've told me sounded like you made a difficult choice, knowing it was very wrong. I can understand that you had to face such cruelty from those who don't understand what you were going through. And Skylar... well, I can understand her rebellious behavior, and yet she does not like gangs or bullies. I had never heard of something like that."
"So you're saying she inspired me to leave the delinquents?" Otis asked, rubbing his arm.
"She gave you a choice, whether to go or to stay with the delinquents, and you chose to leave them." He put his hand on Otis' back, grinning. "It was you who did the right thing, Otis. And you can thank Skylar for helping you out of your situation."
Otis looked at Slither, and he felt guilt falling from his chest, smiling slightly. "Thank you, Slither. I think I can relax now."
"And just remember, I am always here for you and your siblings, whenever you're in trouble." He gave Otis a pat on the back. "Now, let's get back to work."
"Yes, sir," Otis said, and the two went back into the house, where he will have to resume washing the dishes.
