John Runners hit thirteen with a tail, a temper, and a tragedy he never saw coming. After discovering his favorite beat cop was murdered — and then learning the man had secretly been working with Spider-Lady — John spiraled. His new reptilian instincts pushed him too far during the pursuit, and when he nearly beat the killer half to death (accidentally striking Marie in the chaos), he broke. Fearing he’d hurt someone he loved, John hung up the mask and retired as Chameleon Kid, trying to survive school life while hiding his shifting, lizard-like form.
But New Jersey didn’t get the memo. Crime surged again, and when the shark-pirate Red Rouge attacked the streets, John is in conflict over whether he wants to intervene so soon after declaring his retirement — only to watch someone else swoop in wearing his colors. To his shock, the “new” Chameleon Kid fought with claws, grace, and dramatic flips he definitely didn’t teach anyone. Who is this mysterious NEW Chameleon kid?! And what gives them the right to decide the city needed a hero even if John wasn’t ready to return that mantle?
In reality, Marie secretly stole the suit and took up the mantle as Chameleon Kid II, fighting crime with her supernatural agility and fierce determination until John can recover from the emotional blow of betrayal and regain control of his instincts. She isn’t replacing him — she’s holding the line for him. And whether John likes it or not, New Jersey might just be falling in love with its new chameleon.
