Reiko received a divine omen—a mission she had to fulfill in order to earn the blessing of the gods and ascend as a celestial being.
The spirit guided her, and how great was Reiko’s astonishment when, instead of a palace with a newborn emperor whom she was meant to mentor, she saw a shack and heard the cry of a woman exhausted from childbirth.
No mortal, except the one who was chosen, was able to see her spirit. Therefore, witnessing the birth of a small boy, a commoner, Reiko took on the form of one of the midwives. Amid the general chaos, no one had any unnecessary questions: no one had the time to wonder why there suddenly was one more woman.
Finally… the first cry, and Reiko was the one who received the newborn from his mother’s womb.
It was at that very moment that the future emperor received the blessing of the Kirin.
Years passed. Reiko, assuming the forms of various creatures and sometimes even people, observed how her ward grew. From early childhood, she noticed in him qualities worthy of a true emperor.
When the young man turned twenty, he went into the forest to hunt. It was then that Reiko appeared before him for the first time in her true form—the Kirin.
The young man was surprised, but not frightened, as though his soul recognized the one who had held him in her arms when he had been so helpless and small.
“Hey, boy! And what kind of face is that? Come here and stand before me! It is time to make an emperor out of you!”
Reiko burst into laughter, and it seemed the very mountain on which they stood trembled from her mirth.
“You grew into a fine lad! But you are still weak. From now on, I will train you.”
The Kirin was many times taller than the young man and much larger than his youthful body.
Placing her paw on his shoulder, Reiko added with a predatory gleam in her eyes:
“Today is your first lesson! Be a good student and listen…”
