"A short swim from the black sand shores is the divide between the shallows and the rest of the world. The crags surround the island on all sides, more of them than can be counted. They are both our protectors and our captors, calming the harsh waters outside to allow plentiful fishing, but also being unafraid to smash any would-be sailor’s raft to bits against them. Few have tried to swim past, and those that do bring tales of an endless blue so deep you can’t see the bottom.
