Alacorn is an admittedly clumsy Latin portmanteau, but it actually makes linguistic sense. "Winghorn" is what it would translate to. Alicorn is a much weirder term, but I concede it's become the word for it, also canonically in MLP. Originally though, it was invented to have a word for the substance when a unicorn's horn was grounded to dust. Some book in the early 90's or late 80's introduced using it like we know it now. As quirky as that was then, it's still a little bit flimsy.
