The things in the sky are nuclear Missiles, this is back in the human era at the time when overpopulation and environmental catastrophe was growing at an exponential rate and war became rampant within society. AJ, Pobaski ext where made to be capable of withstanding the full force of a nuclear explosion so no real danger here, he's searching the globe trying to find Annie which unfortunately never happened.
