Pretty sure not even in Peyo's weirdest dreams did this character ever look like this. lol

You might be surprised!

The Smurfs were largely sanitised when put before American audiences, back in the early 1980s.

Actually... I almost immediately forgot, they were created in Belgium.
European entertainment always plays a little more mature

The social rules at the time were a bir different, and something like a "hot bikini" (like the above) was not out of place in a kids' comic book in Europe of that period, as it wasn't thought of as too risqué. By the time the Smurfs were introduced in America by 1980 or 1981, American interests changed several things from what Peyo did, not the least being the number of female Smurfs or the addition of Gargamel & Azrael as foils. Now, we can't imagine otherwise. (He wasn't happy about a lot of the changes, but had no control over it.) Oddly, it was an American comic strip that was a key influence on Peyo for the Smurfs: Pogo.

You are totally right about the social rules, some old kids show episodes are even almost unwatcheable nowdays without thinking how wrong or just different the society was. wrong in nowday standards, but back then people didn't though on bad things when showing those, people who judge old times morality using their current moral standards seems to never think how the future humans will judge us, who knows if they will think something so normal like eating meat like a barbarism (not even talking about war)

Belgian Franco sexualism is a lot less free in their animation, you just gotta see the right media

As the Smurfs started out in comics (I'm unsure if the property was ever animated prior to introduction in America), they more or less followed the norms of Europe of the time. TV, however, as with most broadcasting throughout western Europe, was a lot more strict on content, especially since commercial TV wasn't common in the way we understand it, today.

Just as an aside, this would've been exactly what I was looking for 45 years ago! I'll have to think about it, considering the expense, but something I'm very interested in, and wouldn't mind having.

(And yes, I'm that old, now, and was looking for a Smurfette in a bikini like this back then.)
