The Art of War teaches that confronting overwhelming odds is best approached through strategic preparation, deception, and waiting for the opportune moment, rather than direct confrontation. Instead of relying on the enemy's failure, one must build an unassailable defense and wait for the enemy to create vulnerabilities, thereby turning a disadvantage into an advantage through careful calculation, adaptation, and the element of surprise.
Strategic principles
Prepare for the worst: Do not rely on the enemy's mistakes, but on your own readiness. Ensure your position is unassailable before engaging.
Deception is key: Appear weak when you are strong to bait the enemy into an attack. Use secrecy and false reports to keep the enemy guessing about your true intentions and locations.
Create a disadvantage for the enemy: By preparing against multiple possibilities, you force the enemy to spread their forces thin, making them weak everywhere.
Wait for the right opportunity: The best fighters secure themselves against defeat first, then wait for the enemy to provide the opportunity to defeat them.
Attack weakness, not strength: Avoid direct confrontation with overwhelming force. Instead, adapt your strategy to strike where the enemy is weak, like a swift current breaking boulders or a bird of prey hitting its target.
Emphasize calculation and knowledge: Use the five factors—measurement, assessment, calculation, comparison, and victory—to predict the winner before the battle begins.
Avoid a war of attrition: Recognize that winning without fighting is the highest form of excellence. The goal is rarely to destroy the enemy but to achieve your objective with minimal loss
I don't know if they have anything comparable in this world but if it's based on a Human history then maybe there was someone like Sun Tzu to show them the way.
I sure hope so.

Also we keep forgetting that for all his bitching and complaining Nigel HAS had true training and could probably give a couple surprises to Leo if they ever came to blows. True he's be outclassed because of size weight and sight but still unless he forgot everything he knows how to fight. And I bring that up because he's actually offering sound advice here and even Miralle, by giving him that look, reluctantly agrees with. I think they're gonna be glad he's along very soon, lets hope it's not too late.
Remember Nigel's vision had a hoard of Chaos Beasts! coming out of the water. How do you know leaving by boat is not a trap, maybe you should leave by land.
