I completely agree, it's actually to get/ exaggerate the C shape in animation as instructed by the prof. otherwise I would have animated him lifting with his legs. lol nothing like promoting poor lifting form am I right? haha

lmao, yes A's instead of C's would be optimal. XD But yeah, the background would come first, sometimes it's just a very rough version of it, but if the background isn't available its much harder to animate; not knowing where the character is, making sure they are grounded/ not sliding around, or making sure they work with the perspective. 🦝
