Perhaps, a clover was brought from off world, kept safe in a stasis container in a museum. Perhaps, a young Avali fell in love with this clover, as it matched the green of their feathers. Every day they visited, and their admiration was so intense that as they grew older, their color patterns changed to reflect their obsession.
